I bought the following heat gun afew weeks ago from hobbyking.... www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=12336I dont know if this is normal as I bought it for covering in conjunction with a travel iron and have only used it so far for shrinking some heat shrink, but after it has been on for say 1 minute if I turn it off I have to leave it for about 5 mins/until it has cooled down before it will switch on again. The first time this happened (the first time I used it) I thought it had either blown its own element or blown the plug fuse (for our American friends a fuse is a safety precaution fitted into plugs to blow before the unit blows). Five minutes later I turned it on and it worked again. It does this every time. It will keep running for any length of time until I turn it off then I have to wait 5 mins again before switching it on. Is this normal? John PS I make the comment about plugs in the USA cos when I lived in Boston, I couldnt believe how primitive they were and how loosely they fitted in the sockets for such a technologically advanced country. PPS this is neither a slight nor politically motivated comment re the US plugs, simply an observation.

The heat guns that I have in my shop must be switched to the middle position in order to let the motor keep running hence cooling the element before switching off. If you go straight to the off position you can fry the element but most of the time it will trip the thermocoupler and prevent the unit from turning on again untill it has cooled down. Does your heat gun have the running cool down feature? I have never seen a heat gun without it. If you are cooling it down the correct way i would bet that you have a oversensitive thermocoupler. I just followed the link to the heat gun you have.. Position 1 should be cooldown. How long do you leave it running on position 1 after heating on position 2? I let my heat guns run in the cooldown position( should be position 1 on you gun) till the air is cold. ifly

hmmmm, thanks ifly, no I have been switching it straight off. It does have a middle position though I dont think that, that turns the element off completely just to a lower setting. Thanks for the input will give that a go.

If your #1 position is just a lower setting try running it at the lower setting for about a minute befor shutting off. Ifly

That gun has bad reviews and it's not priced right. I found a similar Chinese heat gun locally at Harbor Freight Tools for $15 ( free shipping ;-) ).

Fair enough you saved $2 but that's hardly a big enough amount to worry about. I ordered it along with a nitro engine so its freight was pretty much already paid for. John

I LOVE HK but this gun is crap compared to Home Depot's $20 heat gun, too. Brand-name, high quality and I can take it back if it breaks or stops working. I'm not willing to gamble if I don't have to. PS: Some "5-crown" reviews are bad reviews.

HK is a good place to shop and they have some really good prices but sometimes I am so excited about something I want to buy that i go straight to HK without looking at suppliers right here in the US. You pointed out a perfect example with the heat gun!!! Even if the heat gun in home depot was 5 dollars more, it would be well worth it to purchase it here close to home. Another example, the motors from Jeff at HURC are almost identical and my watt and amp readings have been identical and they are the same price and sometimes cheaper than the HK Turnigys. The best part is you have what you need in 3 days. I find myself buying more supplies from shops like HURC because the price difference is really not all that much. Ifly

I'd love to buy from HURC but I find myself getting what I need from HK since there's usually enough room left over on the shipping weight table to add extras. I'll have to buy two new motors and ESCs from HURC soon but there's a little extra for me that most of you don't have: sales tax. Yup. I live in Florida, where Heads-up RC is located so I have to pay sales tax (7%) when I buy from them. No biggie but it's something more... I DO like that they ship fast so that's where I'll get my power from next.

Anytime I need to order something off the internet and it comes from New Jersey I have it shipped to the New York address. Crap, did I just admit to Tax fraud???
