Is it normal for the DX6i to turn itself on when an rc flight sim usb cable is plugged into the trainer socket?

Yes.
The SIM cable turns on the sticks but does not turn on the signal transmission.
When used as a SLAVE this prevents it from sending a signal-that would mess things up.
