Took my SC Storch out today, 1st flight, fine. Second flight....not so fine. Out to about 250 ft, and 100 up, and the motor cut out. "Oops, lipos must be running out!" Re-start motor to half throttle, turn into wind, and the plane spiralled into the ground. No control input at all! Result, broken motor mount, broken cowl, built undercarriage torn off and sides under wings snapped. On fixing, I've found that the crystal on the stock RX is wobbly, and while on, if wiggled about causes loss of control. I don't know if this is an issue from before the crash or since, but I do wonder if I've been flying with wonky electrics?? If so, this was definately a crash waiting to happen. I've fixed the mount, and reinforced the sides with carbon fibre rods and epoxy . It will fly again, but I need to investigate, and see if it'll be with stock, or if I'll have to rip everything out and spend lots of ca$h ........ Attachments:

wow man, that sucks. Now that cub really IS looking battle torn.
I have read previously that there is a known issue about the crystal coming loose on the stock radios, I think i've even read a fix for it that involved wrapping the receiver with some tape to hold the crystal in firmly.
May I suggest that this could be an excellent time to consider upgrading to a cheap electronics system from hobbyking, since it will cost about the same anyway, and it will give you an opportunity to put some flaps on that beast of yours.

sorry to hear that. Your plane is really original and well done.

Update to this. Taken the RX out of it's case, to check the connections, and found the crystal very loose. It was in fact only connected on one side ( It broke while I was trying to take the first photo). I've tried to re-solder it, but so far, no joy. I don't want to go down the replacement route if I can help it (short of cash!) - any ideas?? Attachments:

Just for the hell of it, why don't you call HobbyZone and tell them your plane lost response and crashed, and when you found it, the crystal was loose?
Ask if there's any way they can help you out with a receiver, as you don't have a lot of funds.
If you were US, I'd send you mine, if we had the same channel, as I've switched over to 2.4 GHz equip.

Well, I've looked, and there is no Hobbyzone UK, just people that sell hobbyzone products. Do you think that Hobbyzone ( US) will reply?

This is the email I'm sending to horizon. Not sure if I've worded this right, so could someone check it over, and make sure it sounds ok? Cheers, Chris.
Hi, I recently received a stock supercub as a present, and was very pleased with it. I have flown it on a number of occasions, and it has been fantastic, with only the occasional glitch, which I put down to interference. However, on Wednesday (11/07/10), whilst flying, I suffered a total loss of control, causing a crash. I have taken the supercub, and repaired the frame and motor mount (top marks for ease of repair!) Whilst investigating the cause of the loss of control, I checked the receiver, only to find only one of the crystals legs was not connected. Unfortunately, while trying to take a photo, I inadvertently managed to break the other. I am not sure if this bad connection was the cause of the loss of control, but as of now I have a brilliant aircraft, and no controller. RX is on CH5, fm27.195m. I was wondering if you could help me at all? Thank you, Chris Sibson.

Looks good to me, I think they'll send you one, hobbyzone are pretty generous with their warranty policy. They replaced my receiver/esc when I burnt it up trying to get my cub out of a tree.

How long does it take hobbyzone/ horizon to reply? Anyone know? I'm sat watching my inbox like a guard dog!

Horizon hobbys have finally emailed me back. I have to send in my damaged RX and they've said they'll replace it! Hope they took note of the fact I knocked the other leg off while trying to photograph it! ( "It wasn't me, It was the macro zoom function, m'lud!") I want my supercub back!!

I'd say it looks fine, but for the fact it's $119.00 for what is basically just an airframe. The list of requirements seems very long ( or maybe I'm just being tightfisted?), but that $119.00 plane could easily become a money muncher, taking up more and more cash for bits..... If you can spare it, and you really like the idea, go for it. For myself, until I'm a lot more proficient, I'll stick to the SC (whenever I get the RX back), and my self builds.

Agreed on the price. But it is a cool plane. I've been hooked on the Storch since I played Close Combat, which uses it for recon.

SC storch will be back in the air soon! Got fed up of waiting for horizon hobbies to send a new RX, so I've spent the pennies and shes now a (cheap) 2.4ghz bird. Battered and scarred, but airworthy all the same! Weirdly, the servo arms for the hobbyzone servos fit the towerpro 9g servos I've got, so saved a bit of work there! 35A lipofly esc, 1500mah lipo (soon to be a 2200) and radiolink 2.4ghz radio set. Not as much as I thought it would be!
