I've read a few people doing this. using fishing line..the hobby zone cheap ones will break on a good enough crash..i was wondering if they are made to break to help save the wing

Yes, if you make them too solid it can do a lot of damage to the plane on rough landings. I just hook mine on with swivels, and don't clip them shut. It also helps if instead of attaching the struts to the battery box, you attach them to each other with a paper clip - that gives them a bit more play, and prevents them from being able to rip out the battery box.

I use a fishing leader on mine. I have had great results but not without consequences. Probably because I made mine too tight, but the tabs in the wings have been pulling a bit opening up the hole. Once that foam gets deformed not much else to do except glue/tape or buy a new wing. Like Dill said, allow room for play. Don't make them too tight if you opt for the leader. I am currently painting a set of original plastic wing struts to put back on the plane (mainly just for looks). While "gently" sanding one of them , it broke right there in my hand. I may be going back to the leader...we'll see. hope this helped.

Oh, and make sure you don't make them too tight. Over a few different struts I made, they progressively got tighter and tighter, until my wing eventually lost the dihedral. I fixed it by hanging the plane by it's wings between two chairs to put the V-shape back into it.

my wing eventually lost the dihedral. Is that why the original struts are so loose, to keep dihedral? I hate how flimsy they are. I'm going to velcro this set so that I can take out some of the slack.

As Dill mentioned, they must have a light "break away" point. Broke my stock struts after the third or fourth flight. So I used the snap-swivel method, but, I made the mistake of using this cool looking craft wire. It looked scale BUT, I wrapped those suckers too rigid to the swivels and after a few (more) bumpy landings, the bat box was wiggling around in the fuse. Still use the swivel/craft wire set up but now I just lightly hook the wire to the swivels. I think it was Fly that coined this area of the fuse as the "bermuda triangle" of the Cub. I agree. Too many pressure and stress points in one small area. A bad choice in a strut mod can open up Pandora's box.

Just make sure they're not so tight to prevent the wing from taking on a nice V-shape when it's loaded, otherwise you loose your stability, and risk the plane spiraling towards the ground when it gets a strong gust of wind (don't ask me how I know that one)
