Well, I am sure that some of you guys who saw my somewhat uneventful maiden were probably waiting for this. My son woke me up at 7 this morning and it was surprisingly calm outside. The wind has been blowing steady at 30mph for 2 days and is again now. At 7 though it was pretty calm; so I thought. I have a park right next door to and a school right behind my house so my wife, my son, my niece and I all walked over to the park for a flight. I really wish i had a video but we forgot to put the sd card back in the camera. So I attempted my first ROG takeoff and taxied off the concrete into grass only to nose-over. 2nd attempt i had a smooth take-off and it felt great! My wife was pretty impressed as well. The entire first flight went perfect except I noticed the wind was blowing a lot harder than I initially thought. the landing went well but almost as soon as the wheels touched down it nosed over. Changed batteries and did another text book takeoff and flight. The wind at this point was blowing hard enough to make the cubby hover unless i pointed the nose to the ground a little. This landing was perfect and in the grass. It stayed on its feet and rolled to a stop. I got caught doing a little tiger woods esque fist pump by some old guy walking his dog. lol kind of embarrassing. Without even thinking about it I did a ROG takeoff into the wind and flew around a little more. (This park is really too small for the cub but there was almost no one around so it worked out ok.) Since I was probably almost out of battery I decided to bring it in for another landing and since I had one good one I assume I am an expert at this point. The landing didn't go very well and I got close to the ground and pull up hard. just as I did the wind grabbed my cubby and I nosed down really hard from about 15 feet onto concrete. Here's the picture evidence: OH! And I forgot to mention; the battery flew out of the plane and landed about 10 feet away! At this point I have taken the plane completely apart. One of the servo arms broke in the crash as well. Parts on order already include the spinner, firewall, gearbox, servo arms, a cowl and some more decals. While I have it all apart I may attempt to ultracote it and do all of the mods I can to make it as indestructible as possible. Thanks for all the tips you guys have already posted on this forum that are gonna make my cubby as nice as it can be. \\edit: forgot to mention. 1. no I did not have the strap on the battery it was all just stuffed in there...lol. 2. while i was resoldering some connections and taking my cub apart i dropped the fuselage....onto...the soldering iron!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ouch! Soldering iron, ouch again!
Sorry to see your damage, glad to see you remain upbeat though & already planning your rebuild.

Wow, hard crash. Now you totally see why we suggested not to do any upgrades yet. Sounds like you got the repairs under control though. Most of my landings have been on grass for that same reason. I've gotten to the point where if I have some concrete to land, it would be pretty smooth, but I'm still working on my spot landing (landing on a specific spot). For the battery, are you doing the battery box strengthening mod? As an additional suggestion, try this mod I did for my stock batteries to fit perfectly: supercubclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=tt&thread=2851&page=1

Thanks for the link. I'm definitely going to do your mod. I was really trying to land on grass but there is a concrete path all around the perimeter of the park and when I really should have hit the throttle and pulled up i instead stayed with no throttle and pulled up and the wind stood it up vertical then back down with some force right on that path. ouch.

Oh Man!!! I thought that I was having a bad day. Wow...and the soldering iron!?!? Yeah, keep your chin up. That's the cool thing about all of this is that everything is pretty much fixable/replaceable. d**n...and the soldering iron too!?!? Well, the reason that I am here is for similar circumstances but mine are a lot less severe. I will be posting a video of today’s flights as soon as I get a chance to put one together. I'm going to have to strip the cub down and give her a makeover. For whatever reason she doesn't want to come left anymore...it's real slooooooow. Right rudder is no problem but left isn't happening. There may be something wrong with the servo. Anyway this slight issue has caused all kinds of havoc including dang near hitting a power line...twice! Finished up the battery in mid air only to crash land in a huge puddle upside down with the camera still attached and underwater (It still works BTW, not sure how). I attempted to get some tow footage as per another members thread only to be towing an "out of control glider" behind. It went crazy!! I got it all down in one piece. I tried to use a beat-up old Firefly II plane with no motor as the chase plane...It was like towing a pissed off pit-bull. It wasn't pretty. My co-pilot nose landed her in the concrete after barely missing a cluster of poles. I captured everything on film. The one thing that I didn't get on video is when my co-pilot brought her in for a final landing and ended up smacking a pole after all. My cub needs some TLC so she'll be grounded for awhile. You sat it on the soldering iron!?!? ( Sounds like something I'd do)

Were you wearing the pink vampire teeth when you flew it?

That's some REALLY bad luck mate, although I am pleasantly surprised to see that someone has had worse luck with their cub than me. :-)

Haha! you know it! I never go anywhere without my pink vampire teeth. lol... I just realized those were in the picture after I posted this. They belonged to my niece, thank you very much. The soldering iron might as well have fallen in my eye because that's what it felt like ...lol ...I went ahead and started covering it and the scheme looks pretty bad right now. The only 2 colors I had were red and cream. Wish I would have gotten white instead as I can't cover the tail and will have to try and match up some paints. We'll see how it all turns out. You can no longer see the soldering iron mark though! Glad I could make you feel better about yourself there Dillzio!....lol Thanks to all for their condolences, btw. I know most of you can feel my pain even if you haven't been dumb enough to wing stall into a slab of concrete and then drop your fuselage on to a piping hot iron all in one day.

Yeouch! Jeez, concrete REALLY has no pity! Its' amazing the difference (grass vs. concrete) it makes in damage.
Just take it one piece at a time. She'll fly again. But now with cool scars and vampire teeth ;D

ok that's it. the pink vampire teeth WILL fly. lol This weekend, I have completely covered my plane with monokote (looks somewhat amateurish but with my experience the next one will look guhlorious!) I used cream and red and it looked pretty lame so I went and got some krylon in yellow and black and gave the whole plane a coat of yeller. still looks somewhat amateurish and is probably a little heavy but I think it is going to be strong. got all my parts en route from a hobby shop that i have never used before called red rocket hobbies...they were the only ones who had everything in stock and didn't want to touch me inappropriately over shipping . lol They charged 8 bucks for priority air, btw. Think I will create some of the regular graphics for the yellow cub in photoshop(the black lightning) and print it on that sticky laminate stuff then use the stock numbers and wing stripes from the decal sheet i have on order. if anybody has any suggestions on alternate graphics and how to proceed i'm all ears. now i suppose, all that is left is to learn to fly. lol oh and i need to find a way to steal the vampyre teefs from my niece and get em mounted on the cubby...lol.

Just to add to your misery.....I suggest you check out the lipo also. (Newbie) crashes are a main cause of premature lipo death. Holes in the skin of the cells are just about certain death unless patched immediately. Crushing of the cells breaks down the layers and can cause shorts and other internal 'mayhem'. This generally causes a more lingering decline depending on the extent of damage.
I suggest just patching it up. There's likely to be more 'learning experiences'.

Yeah, I gave the lipo a good looking over. It flew out of the plane on impact but landed in the grass. It appears to be unaffected as i have two of the stockers and I can't tell which one crashed. I'm going to keep a close eye on both for swelling while they charge next time though. Too late at this point to just patch it up and move on. The mods have been done and she is all covered and painted. I fully expect to crash on the next flight(hopefully i won't) or the one after that and destroy some paint/covering. But, I kind of enjoy messing with it/repairing it so it's no concern. I am going to do everything I can though to avoid crashing and further my learning. To start, I am going to make sure the wind is calm like it has been of course all day today while my cub is out of commission. But I think I will be looking for a better field as well. the park next door is a little small and the place where I did my maiden while huge and perfectly clear of any wires, trees, people, has no low grass to land in. Just crazy bumpy caliche and mesquite bushes. I appreciate the reminder to check out the battery. I am still a bit wary of lipos so I am fairly cautious about them. Although you can't quite tell by the way I quickly mash it into the battery box and fail to secure it with the strap. Lesson learned there for sure. Even though I crashed pretty badly on my 5th time in the air and second day to fly I am really excited about this hobby. The time I have spent in the air has been amazing and the time I have spent doing repairs, mods, and customizations has been really fun as well. I was telling n4768z in another conversation that i am not sure whether I am more the modeller type or the pilot type. I enjoy both quite a bit so far even though my skill in both at this point is somewhat laughable...
