I wasn't sure where to post this one but VG's work in conjunction with ailerons, sorta... But really adding vortex generators is a wing mod so I guess it belongs here. Anyway to my question, has any one experimented with VG's to improve the STOL characteristics of the Super Cub? A lot of full size STOL aircraft use them and I thought it would be interesting to try them out on our little SC's. So lets hear your opinions or ideas

I recall reading about this a long time ago. I believe the consensus was that at this scale did didn't have much effect for all the effort.

Having installed VGs on full size aircraft I know that their location is critical with being just a few mm out making a lot of difference to their effect. Also the VGs themselves are very small and usually not more that 30mm long. Now try scaling all that down to cub size and I don't know if you even make the VGs that small. If you really want to make a STOL wing for your cub it would probably be best to make a drooped leading edge similar to the Horton STOL kit for full sized airplanes. www.hortonstackdoor.com/stolcraft_description.htmThis would actually increase the wing chord (fatter wing). But there ain't no free lunch, more lift means more induced drag!

I think you gents are correct - even if I could scale down VG's they would be microscopic... After doing some more research on the subject, I realized that we patient and inventive RC guys can scale down everything to the smallest detail, but we can never scale down AIR and the way it moves... Air movement is the basic theroy behind VG's in the first place so forget it. Brit- that is just where I was headed next, increasing wing chord. I was thinking of trying something much like in this youtube vid posted by Ratty8411: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxVD8Rm1FEcI've tried to contact him to ask about the flight performance but no reply. As far as increased drag goes, I'm not too concerned about that because I have plenty of power and flight time with my current set up (don't need to worry about range in a football field!). I am just experimenting with different mods to see how slow and short I can get the SC take offs & landings... -G

Cheers, Mate. It was a bit of a head scratcher working out how to make the CF struts but I'm pleased with how they turned out.
