Gearing allows you to turn a larger prop for more thrust. The stock 480 is used as a direct drive in planes like the Stryker. It is limited to a 6x4 prop, has poor thrust but MUCH higher speed once it gets going. Getting going is a tad anxiety making at first. You really have to give it a good throw at full throttle. Gearboxes are used with high RPM motors to get them usable for slower planes. Once you get much over 3000KV (RPM/volt) you pretty much have to use a gearbox. For the majority of sport flying 2000kv is a more normal limit. This test will give you more info: Experiments With Speed 400 + Gearing www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49977

Yeah, with direct drive it will spin way faster, but you'll have much less torque, so you'll need a smaller prop. If you tried spinning the stock prop direct drive you'd burn the motor out.

You would also have to reverse the cable connections to the Rx in order to reverse the spin on the motor. I am trying this on a new application.
