So today I finally got my ESC, LiPo and charger. Installed it and was eager to fly with my friend, who had also just upgraded his SC.
Forecast called for rain, but it was holding off and the wind was almost calm.
Went to the field, and I took off first. The power was just fantasic. It took off in a could feet, no longer struggles to climb, and loops can be done effortlessly. Couple minutes into the flight the plane is heading away from me, and I go to turn it around to brig it back towards me and away from the tree...no response. Uh oh. Tried everything, but the plane would not respond as it flew past the treeline.
Now, my rudder position was off center, so the plane would fly to the left a bit. I watched the plane slowly loose altitude and turn back towards me. I had it at full throttle just in case I might get signal for a second, but when I could tell it was going down, I cut the power. We ran over to the trees and couldn't see it. Luckily it's not thick woods, and apparently there's a street and houses and a business behind them. So we hop in the car and head over to see if it crashed closer to the other side of the streets. I'm concerned about the fact that rain is coming and it's going to rain for like 4 days...so if it gets lost it'll be ruined. I also worry of someone finding it and taking it, or it damaging property. We drove up the street and couldn't see it in the street or in anyone's backyard. As we're coming back towards a Lounge, I see it in the parking lot. We head in, and there it is, about 4 feet away from a couple of parked ambulances, and right where to parking lot meets the dirt. Went over to inspect it, and somehow the plane must have landed almost perfectly, because a side from one of the wheels being slightly bent and some dirt in the cowl, there was no damage at all. Motor, gearbox, fuselage, everything. We couldn't believe it.
And just as we head out, it starts to rain.
On a related note, apparently the ESC is defective...getting a replacement shipped out.
