Ok guys n gals, I have just finished my fiberglass landing gear. It is really cool but i didn't make it thick enough. It is pretty strong and very lightweight but i want to strengthen it a bit. So as a result I want to add carbon fiber rods in an X pattern on the inside of the gear. My only problem is my ignorance on how I would attach the rods to the fiberglass..... what I have come up with is to drill holes the same diameter as my cf rods and cut them a little long. Them epoxy the ends. I need to draw on the years of collective experience we have here on this site to figure out how I would attach these rods, or ANY OTHER suggestions we may come up with no matter how outlandish. P.S. Gawd the things we do when its windy outside. ;D Wish I could post pics here but here is a link with my pics: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11700273&postcount=16772

I just found out I can add more layers to it to beef it up. So what I will do is wrap 5 more layers around it. It is so light now it should still be light when thats done. There are 7 in it now. And this is the first time I have messed with fiberglass.

Nice job man! I have been storing this jug of resins and hardener for a day when I got brave enough. I just know once I crack it, it will be glass time for everything. Like another hobby all together. There are so many things I want to build out of glass it is crazy. Like a canoe, or a wind surf board, or knee board, or...the possibilities are endless.
Nice work and look, Kevin

most of my glassing is for repairs unfortunately lol. wouldn't mind making a boat hull though.
you can add extra layers were you need them, like curves or joints. if you wanted you could inlay the CF rods into the fiberglass. normally if something has a shiny finish you will wanna rough it up with sand paper before glassing over it, it will give the expoy/resin something grab on to.
what weight cloth are you using?

Hi duck. I appreciate the pointers. The fiberglass I am using is made by SIG. Doesn't have a weight on the package but it is called SIGSH572 glass cloth tape. It is 1" X 9'. I used two packages to make the gear. The epoxy I am using is some I bought from my LHS. It came in two bottles and u have to mix equal parts. It dosen't smell like regular fiberglass resin but it is strong and it surprises me just how light it is. And it has a little give like a spring. I hope it will work. I plan on attaching it to the popsicle sticks I have beefed up my battery compartment with. I hope it works.

ya epoxy smells "better" then most polyester resin lol. i remember seeing that sig glass at the hobby shop, i picked up some of the 4" great planes stuff so i might try making one for my simple stick, the aluminum LG i am using is kinda heavy.

Been out this afternoon with my sc,after watching other flying my plane I said to myself, today is my day alone on the flying field.Took off a bit scary, but then tried a quick landing.Little nosedive, lucky no damages.checked the plane again and up she goes, then a crowd of partying group cheering. Now I felt landing again and twisted the wing. They had a good laugh HA hA hA A A A . Removed the broken struts and FORGOT the battery power was low. Crashed in a neerby bush and sadly broke the tail of the fuselage. A pitty, crowd was silent.Picked up the plane ,like as if it was complete, Got a huge cheeer. That gave me inspiration. Now its fixing time. -----I'm thinking of glueing and stiffen or support the pieces together with thin 'sosatie' stick dowel like wooden pins, before taping it for more support. COMMENTS AND ADVISE PLEASE GUYS.

Don't give up, ever. You will master the cub, I've been flying it for 2 years now and upgraded to brushless and more power. I'm having a blast flying the Cub now and I still crash doing stupid things like trying to fly again with low battery. Just remember if you think it's too windy or the batt is low and you should't fly, don't. Listen to the voice of reason before you crash.
