How do you know when there is to much wind to be flying the Cub?
The little ribbon on my radio surges from nothing to oo... maybe 45degrees out.
It is not a steady wind, it fluxuates.
So how do you all just if the eind is to much?
Thanks George

How do you know when there is to much wind to be flying the Cub? George Learn the hard way? Steady wind better than gusty wind. You are looking for dead calm to < 5 mph. A long thin ribbon hanging off your aeriel should not go out more than 45 degrees. For a first flight barely fluttering is best. Some locations make this hard to get.

Well I debated and took her out for a first flight. Wind was gusty, 0-9mph I would say. FLight lasted oooo... maybe 10 seconds LOL, but I think I gave it to much elevator when tossing it and plane went up and stalled out I think, then came down and around, I pulled out of it and then it clipped the ground. did a cart wheel or two and stopped. Did not break an thing, you would have never known it crashed. That made me very happy. So I have to wait for a better day obviously. Work all week and dark when I get home so I hope next weekend will be better! Thanks

I would encourage you to go look at my recommendations again, specifically - tossing, elevator use, and over control. Glad you didn't break anything but triple check-some breaks can be pretty occult if you aren't used to looking for them. My buddy used to crash his Cub and claim it was OK. Then he'd bring it to me and it would take 2 hours of gluing and splinting to repair the extensive damage. It's a credit to the strength of those things. You have a SIM? Good place to get some practice. Save you a LOT of grief and Cub parts. n.ethz.ch/student/mmoeller/fms/index_e.html

i have a FMS sim which I use alot, I know I can fly the plane, biggest prob with the flight today, the complete problem was to much wind is all. A nice calm day I think things will go much smoother. I tossed her and she went good, and a gust of wind got under her and stood nose straight up, and then she rolled to the left and I got it unde rcontrol enough to get her down with no damage which impressed me! So lets all hope for some nicer weather! George

Glad you got it down with no damage, that makes it a successful flight! I've been using the FMS sim (only one I have) to practice throttle management for longer flights and using the throttle for altitude increase and decrease. Seems to take longer for the plane to respond and isn't very practical in RC park flying but it is one more trick in the bag, good to know and just plain fun.

Those gusts can be nasty, I've had a few crashes from sudden wind changes. ;P
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

How would you guys that have hadflight time with your cub, compare it to the FMS cub? Controls, movement, etc.... I can fly it like no ones business on the FMS!! LOL
trying to get an idea of what to expect is all. For when it is in the air for more then 10 seconds. LOL
Thanks George

It depends on how you have the throws set up for your control surfaces. I think it's possible to get similar flight with the clevis farther out on the horn - but the wind will change all that in a hurry.
Just get it up and keep it up! - that's what She said... Don't worry about landing until you've had a chance fly it around a bit. Beginners want to keep it close an low - BAD BAD BAD. That's what I did at first - doesn't work.

Yea, the sim on FMS is pretty slow on the throws for the SC, I fly mine on innermost settings on control horns ;D

Ok guys I had my real maiden flight today. wind was calm, barely moving. I will see if I can get some video posted. But went rather well. I did not crash, but first couple of landings were not perfect but the plane held up awesome! Plane seemedsluggish in turns but was quite speedy when flyign nice and level. The last landing I came in and was afraid of bombing in a snowbank so I throttled up and pulled and and the landing gear caught another snowbank. LOL this caused the battery box and landing gear to rip out. the battery box did not come out all the way but I did have to do some repair. Also the little white skirts did not last to long. Do I need to fly with those? I will come up with another way to beef up the landing gear instead of the white skirts. I have also made a set of homeade ski's I will post pics soon.
Any thoughts on beefing up the batt box area?
Thanks everyone!
George
Thanks

Congratulations George.
The White skirts are not needed, they are purely cosmetic. The first time my battery box got pulled out I reglued using Epoxy and it held up pretty good.
Look forward to seeing the vid.

What I've done with the battery box is to take the whole thing out, clean up the white silicone adhesive the factory uses and re assemble the battery box using a stronger glue and more of it. After it's assembled I run a bead of 5 min epoxy around the inside, between the battery box and the fuselage (can't use the X port so I don't worry about slopping glue in it) Then add a strip of packing tape along each side of the box (keeping the ventilation slots open) and it will last a while.
