I think the lightweight spackle works well, but then I'd just use a water based varethane or urethane on top of that. As always, TEST ON SCRAP.

Do you think the smooth coat, and then paint will add too much weight for stock SC's ??

i just finished my plane and used clear waterbased urethane (for indoor furniture) and it works great and is extremely cheap, especially if you buy the 2nd grade tins (dented etc)
i wouldnt be concerned at all with the weight of the paint on your SC, its not going to add that much at all and most people lug around full size digital cameras and all sorts.
if the cub can carry a regular digital camera or have the added drag of massive oversized 3" wheels then a thick coat of paint isnt going to do squat to its performance.
