I have not flown the cub in 2 weeks now. The wind has been rediculous everyday with out fail. The last day I did I hover landed from about 25 feet at 1/4 throttle. No joke. It was almost uncontolable. I fly a Robinson R22 helicopter out of Kennesaw airport a few times a week and 2 weekends ago at 8:00am it was nice and smooth. My 4:00 flight was nasty. Very turbulent and I fought to stay on course. I almost got sick from being bounced around so much. I have not flown the R22 since that weekend because it has been so windy the R22 is not rated to fly. very unusual for Georgia. Even my TigerMoth and Jenny slowflyers are grounded because at 3 in the morning the wind will still knock them to the ground. I hate this weather.

It's when you start getting some altitude that worries me. Seems calm at gound level, but the plane starts bouncing around up high. Thinking on getting some balloons and a canister of helium..then I could send a balloon up to check the wind before flying.

I, too, have pulled off the vertical landing you described. I actually enjoy flying in heavy winds. It presents a challenge and you can get big altitude really fast and then bring her around with the wind and dive at 30 degrees and get some massive speed built up! The VTL in high wind is also pretty thrilling when you can walk right up to the plane as it is just about to land and get it perfectly vertical.
What I hate are sprinklers...
