Just thought I'd let you all know about my latest foam coating test.
I've taken some SC packing material - so it should be the same as the SC itself - an lightly sanded it with 220 just enough to get rid of those circular dimple marks and dull the surface. I then brushed on a light coat of Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane with a foam pad brush. The styrofoam seemed to soak it up a little, so I brushed it on until it was a light even coat. The next day I very lightly sanded it with 220 and applied a second coat - a bit more liberally.
There has been NO melting or softening of the foam. I haven't tested the adhesion or tape resistance, but am encouraged about the overall finish and it should take Krylon fusion easily. I would think it would be more dent and scratch resistant than paint alone. I'll let you know future test results.
If the adhesion is as good as I hope, this may be a very good thing ;D.

I've only been able to fly the 480 Cub once - for about ten minutes until it too got foggy. This is just research - in case I want to take some tape to the Cub and put a new and improved finish on it. E

Well, the duct tape test worked. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the urethane to pull off the foam. It also looks like glass! I think Krylon Fusion will bond nicely to it. I'll post a pic or two soon.

how does it respond to flexing, does it crack or does it flex with the foam? might try this on my simple stick if it works good.

It flexes much like paint, but tougher. It may get harder as it cures - I don't know. I'll spray some Fusion on it tomorrow and see how that works. Some pics

Well, the paint passed the duct tape test with flying colors. ;D
After repeatedly pressing duct tape down and rubbing it, it pulled free with no paint peeling - YAHOO!
I'll post a pic tomorrow of the painted sample with Krylon fusion and Krylon H2o. Neither paint peeled.

Here are a couple pics of the paint test. The black is Krylon Fusion matte or flat finish- works best by far. The white and red are Krylon H20 - messy, doesn't cover as well, drips and splatters. I think this the way to go,just sand the Urethane with 220 before painting. They passed the duct tape test again this A.M.

i found this stuff at the home depot in rattle cans. i wonder how the coverage would compare? seems like overkill to buy a whole gallon of it
what was the gloss on the one you used?

Yeah don't buy a gal. of it. I bought it in a quart can - satin finish. I think it was about $12 - I'm sure it's several spray cans worth.
