howdy yall
just ordered up all the parts for my aileron mod. i want to get rid of most of the dihedral for the best roll capability, but im not sure how finicky the wing is. by this i mean...does the wing have to be perfectly flattened to work properly, because i doubt i can achieve perfection. if there are some spots that are a little off will it be ok? im currently using my old wing as an experiement to try out ellis's cut 'n glue mod because i thought it would give me the best results.
if all goes to hell on my experiement and i chicken out, would i lose much performance (roll wise) if i dont do anything to the dihedral? or would it still roll better than stock. im not looking for a complete acrobat here.
if anyone has any better ideas let me know. ive sifted thru all the posts here and i havent really found anything that convincing.

just get as much as you can out. i just taped mine on the bottem and forced it flat, it rolled quite well.

thanks!

You plan to flatten the wing before you put ailerons in? Bad idea. Flat wings fly poorly with rudder only-quite poorly. Having said that my experience is with trying to learn L-thumb rudder work on OTHER flat wings with ailerons, turning using rudder only (Minimag and Wasp) I have not tried it with the Cub but no reason to think it would be otherwise.
It will fly OK with ailerons and dihedral. Once comfortable you can pull the dihedral out.

oh no you misunderstood om doing the aileron mod.
i tried ellis's cut and paste method on the old wing and it seemed to work ok. most of the dihedral was removed, but there is now a bit of anhedral...a tiny bit. will this affect the flying?

I have completely flattened my wing, and it will roll, but it still always wants to nose up (or down when inverted) since the top of the wing is curved, and the bottom flat, it will always want to provide lift. At least this is how I understand it, and what I see when I do rolls...

My anheidral is minor enough that I'm guessing it comes out when it's in the air. I'll have to look for that next time I fly it - whenever that'll be.

as long as your's can stand up to the 480 and come back in 1 piece i think i will be ok thanks for the great idea! admiral

ok after final measurements i found one side of the wing's dihedral to be an eighth of an inch higher than the other side when laid flat on a table and measured from the center of the wingtip. will these matter or affect flight characteristics? there's not really much i can do about it now
the funny thing is that when its on the plane everything checks out pretty dead on with the dihedral. hmmmmmm......

So after my aileron mod I taped the Dihedral out of my wing. But now I'm getting way too much lift. I flew around for a bit and tried to adjust the elevator to remove some of it. I didn't go far enough or couldn't figure out which way to take it lol.
Well after play around for about 5-6 minutes, I tried to adjust it again but in the mean time I cut power too much and didn't manually correct the elevator as I was trying to adjust trim. Plane pitched straight up stalled and nose dived into the ground.
I am really glad I decided to reinforce my nose cone by padding it with large chunks of foam fitted around the gearbox and motor (leaving some airflow room). The motor/gearbox/bulkhead survived with no damage. Prop broke ( no biggy). And the battery box/landing gear disassembled itself onto the grass.
Gonna fix the battery bay later today with some fiberglass cloth and epoxy. But Just wondering why I'm getting such a large pitch up now after flattening out the wing.
Oh if you want to see my Maiden voyage I will attach a youtube link. Bear in mind though, when I took this video, I had only flown the supercub one time for a few minutes before doing the mods. Otherwise completely unexperienced amateur pilot. Toward the middle of the video I even bust out a couple of loops. BTW This was before I took the dihedral out of the wing. Wanted to be able to use rudder if for some reason the ailerons didn't work.

seems to me that youre afraid to give that puppy some power and get it up in the air...go for it!!! its meant to fly not hang out 10 feet from the ground . youre much better off one or two mistakes high where you can correct without worrying about hitting the ground. keep working on it youll get there eventually. overall not bad at all for first flights good luck admiral
