I tried to maiden my low wing supercub this morning. I went down to my favorite field and they were playing soccer. Who in their right mind plays soccer, at sunrise, on a below freezing day?.
So went to my back up field, an empty contruction site. Hmmm, someone plowed under all the grass during the week, and its pretty much bare frozen dirt. I don't want to be belly landing on that.
Off to my third choice. Cool. not a soul around. Open up the van, put a fresh battery in, and run through the preflight.
Everything looks good, all ready to go.
Pick up my plane, check the motor, turn around for a toss into the wind, and there is freaking people and leashless dogs (bad no-no here) everywhere. 3 cars full pulled up while I was doing the preflight.
Pack it up and look for a different park. by now the sun is well up and the breeze is picking up. I finally find an empty park, get ready to fly, and the ribbon on my Tx is straight out.
Aw Nutz.
Pack it up and go home.
Wasted 10 bucks in fuel driving around and didn't get to try out the wing mod.
Some one doen't like me.

lemme see what I can find to post. Basically, Last weekends crash blew the battery box and a fair bit of foam out of the belly of the cub. Its 2 weeks till I can get a new fuse, so I started cutting. members.shaw.ca/agentsmith/Supercub/Supercub_Oct13_Crash.jpgI made a template to mark the fuse, and cut the cradle out of the belly. members.shaw.ca/agentsmith/Supercub/Supercub_Lowwing2.jpgmembers.shaw.ca/agentsmith/Supercub/Supercub_Lowwing1.jpgI made a cradle out of a windshelid washer jug and glued it into the fuse. I moved the wing back 1/2" and the wind screen back the same amount. the roofline was lowered a bit, and the battery and Rx moved forward. members.shaw.ca/agentsmith/Supercub/Supercub_Lowwing3.jpgIts ugly as heck, but I don't really care, so long as I can make it fly. The roof piece is a piece of foam from an airconditioner box, with a pin at the rear and a skewer through the act hole to hold the front down. Still need to figure out LG, and work ona piece to smooth out the belly and underside of the wing.. For reinforcement on the wing I used 10 lb test fishing line laced tightly in an X pattern through the strut eyes. It will be interesting to see if it works

I'm familiar with bigtones mod, I studied it extensively. The paint is tamiya silver acrylic over 2 coats of Future floor wax. The cowl is tamiya italian red over silver metallic enamel. The trim is hangar 9 ultra trim, with a layer of tape over it. If everything went perfect it would look like a piper cherokee when I'm done, but nothings perfect. This is what happens when I'm jonesing for a plane with no cash. Just my luck every LHS in town is sold out of SC fuselages. But i'm hoping to pick up a new Tx/Rx/SX package tomorrow. What the heck I'll do with 8 channels is beyond me, but I'm sure I can come up with something.

Hey - you've got a workbench just like mine. Too much flying to do to spend time tidying it up. ;D Your bad field day is like lots of mine in the UK. If it's got grass then it's got big trees and lots of people. If it's not grass, it's a farmer's field. Good to see the low wing appearing out of the ashes. I'm just getting a new RX. Having fixed all the bad joints and cracks in the tracks, I found a broken capacitor. No way of fixing it. Hope to be out flying when the wind speed drops, assuming there is some open space left for me! Retiredbri

Retiredbri The work bench is my welding bench, the pile of parts surrounding my makeshjift jig is the guts from an 85 Kawi Vulcan engine. I tidy it up once in a while, but with three bike projects on the go, parts pile up fast. My buddy is supposed to be moving some of his stuff out soon. He's got enough parts here for three bikes. add it to my two bikes and its a lot of parts. Out here on the prairies, its really hard to find a calm day, I tend to do my flying at daybreak, to avoid the inevitable wind. Fields are getting harder to find, but there was a lot of new construction going up, so the city is laying streets out all over the place. Construction is dropping off now, so hopefully some of these dirt lots grow over and stay undeveloped for a while.

The Low wing mod is officially a bust, literaly. Three attempts, three crashes,
It did actually ROG and take off, but it was either way heavier than the stock cub, or my motor is worn out. It took forever to ROG, and never seemed to build airspeed.
It would climb a bit, but not well, then usually roll left and spin in.
After several repairs, this morning's antics finally proved fatal to the fuselage.
It's OK though, picked up a new fuse yesterday, If the LHS is greedy enough to be open today, I'll pick up a wing too.
And the stupid little $20 firebird phantom I bought almost flies too, just need a better way to fix the boom. I just wanted the electrics for a foamie experiment cause it has a vee tail. Maybe a delta pusher or a small float plane.
Score on the day, Gravity 3 Pilot 0
Sux, I wanted to try out my skis on the fresh snow.

I checked outyour site while I was building mine, and use some of the same techniques.
I haven't given up. I intend to take my new found knowledge and do it again. Just with a lighter plane
What can I say, I'm a sucker for punishment.
I just need another fuselage to play with, since the last one is really messed up, and the weight is getting excessive. Next on the agenda, fly and crash my new fuse till its in the right condition.
Bought a new virgin wing too, even though the old one is still serviceable.
