Hello all.
After stumbling across this board and reading the many posts I finally took the plunge and ordered a Super Cub. Received her about three weeks ago and eagerly ripped the box open...Geez like a kid at christmas ;D. Having poured over the posts in Tips n tricks I taped up the wing and proceeded thru my mental checklist, battery box and servos glued?..yup! Firewall secure...Check! Wings and control surfaces centered...Gotcha! Install larger wheels..Good to go! Charged up the batteries with the knowledge I was way ahead of the game . We spent the first couple of days taxiing her up and down the street making one short (about 6') hop after which my wife turned to me and said. "You flied." "Yup, I flied good!" I replied proudly. ;D Well I couldn't put off actually flying her forever, as my wife started asking me "Why have an airplane if all you do is drive it up and down the street?" "I'm in training." I replied "This is seriously technical and carries a heavy responsibility, why I'll be piloting 25 ounces of foam and plastic at unknown speeds rocketing through the sky! Besides.....what if I crash it?" ::)Well needless to say a time and place was set for her maiden flight. That saturday dawned bright and clear, not a breath of wind so we raced to our chosen field and prepped our trusty Cub for her first flight. I decided that with all my taxiing practice a ROG takeoff was in order. So after preforming the obligatory range check I sat her down and began to smoothly run up the throttle, as she gained speed and smoothly lifted off I stood in awe, I was truly flying her! All the while at an altitude of at least six feet she slowly banked to the right, lost altitude, caught a wingtip and nosed over. Dang! I'd forgotten to even try to fly her Changed the broken prop and tried again, this time my wife hand launching her. I managed to stagger her into the air, At last! I was flying!...All over the sky ;D. Five minutes later with sweat beading my forehead and with trembling hands I decided to try to land her. Easing down I desperately tried to remember all I'd read about actually landing. as she settled I flared too soon then dove for the ground and cartwheeled her in...another broken prop. needless to say we flew 5 more times that day and have flown her at least 15 more times in the week since until the servos that I thought were "glued" in came loose while my wife was her pilot and the lawn darted from about 200'. It brought tears of joy to my eye to see the look of absolute panic on my wifes face as she desperately thrust the TX at me while the Cub was in its final dive. . She's since been rebuilt only needing a new fuselage and prop shaft. More to follow. ;D
