ok here's some pics of the mod im doing to get ready for my lipos. took out all the elctronics and the plastic ESC holder/battery box. i smoothed out the opening and covered it with spare foam and 30 minute epoxy. i will cover up the screw holes, act holes, and the little gaps around the new foam with model filler and then sand smooth. i also covered those 3 holes on the underside of the fuse. will load the new batteries from the top i plan to cut out some balsa to lay on the inside for support (i didnt like the look of balsa on the outside. i can attach my landing gear into this with a simple cut in my new foam bottom. i'll afix the landing gear section of the old battery box with some screws into the balsa. everything will be covered with ultracote and you wont be able to see a thing (hopefully!) more pics to come! i will get the window cutout pics and balsa work when im finished. comments welcome admiral

Hey to say so but you gotta undo the putty job if you want your electronics to last. Those holes are for airflow. You need plenty of it to keep your esc/battery cool. If you don;t have enough it will over heat. Your rx may fail due to heat also. So you might rethink that part.
Hope this helps, Kevin

i cut out the windows and reinforced them with balsa (pics to come), so wouldnt that give enough airflow? i still am going to leave the battery box closed up. i plan on leaving the windows open. i can take the foam out of the vent holes, but i just have to do it before i cover, probably in a few days.
let me know what you think. i dont want to fry the elecs

oooo, i forgot about this thread. im all finished with my ultracote and paint job. took it out for a couple flights, but then i was persistent in flying it in 13 mph winds and i ripped out the landing gear and also chipped some paint in areas, and ripped up the cowl. i find it funny that i havent broken a prop yet with all my nosedives. (ive given up on keeping the cub pretty). my ultracote job isnt the best, but the wrinkles are really tricky to work with..o well the window cutout didnt affect my flight at all, so i guess my inner frameowrk worked well. everything else went back together good i hate to admit defeat but kevin was right, the foam on the battery box didnt work. i ended up ripping out the foam and did a balsa mod with the original battery box frame and door. it works well and looks a bit better. i just sprayed the box (yellow krylon is a perfect match for cub yellow) but i will get up some pics tonight before i go out with my club tomorrow a.m. thanks for your comments! admiral

admiralev,
You probably already know this so bear with me. When using Ultracote spray the surface with Windex or a cup of water with a couple drops dishwashing liquid mixed in. Apply the ultracote over the wet surface. Doing this allows you to slide the coating where you want it, work out the wrinkles then wipe over the coating with a soft cloth working the moisture to the outside edge of the coating. As you do this the coating will adhere to the surface smoothly. This works very good for fragile waterslde decals or any decal or sticker. Auto bodyshops use this technique to apply pin stripping.

While in High Power Rocketry all my decals and pin stripping was applied in this fashion. Never had a wrinkle or an air bubble.
