Hey, I recently got a hobbyzone supercub and had a lot of fun flying it . However, when I flew it at my local park, it was impossable to land it without the cub flipping over due to grass. The only way I was able to land it is if I landed it on a pathway or if I stalled at low speed a few inches off the ground and let it gently fall onto the grass. I then found this forum and discovered that I could mod the wheels and get better ones. However, there are so many that I don't know which ones to get. Can someone please recommand me good wheels which I would be able to land on grass easily. Also, when I was looking at the different types of the wheels, I noticed that some are treaded and some are smooth. And also, what type of wheels would be better for the hobbyzone supercub, foam or rubber?

Come on, put a little work in. This entire section is devoted to landing gear modifications. There are dozens to choose from. Read a little. In a nutshell > bigger is better.

I also didn't see any that were specifically for landing on grass without flipping over. Also, wouldn't landing gears that are too big, cause the plane to weigh more and perform a bit worse?

Then read this one and do it. supercubclub.proboards78.com/index.cgi?board=whls&action=display&thread=1003I prefer the 3" Dubro's myself mounted on an epoxied brass shaft. . Scale wheels look fine but are worth s**t in grass, and actually aren't all that hot on tarmack either. I upsize most of my wheels. Now how are you going to decide if this piece of info is any more useful than what is already been written? fly

Hi All I just put large wheels on my SC , have had 2 3/4 inch ones for some time but still was not to good in grass , so went to 3 1/2 inch with a 1 3/4 inch tail wheel ( Tail wheel is a stock SC main gear wheel )All these are mounted on 5/32 brass tube axels epoxied to the original axel wheels are secured with 5/32 collars. Makes SC look like a true " BUSH PLANE" ha ha . Allso modified the gear with some bracing to make it more solid .Have not had a chance to see how it flys . Some pics of how it looks Jerry

whoa sayers being a little harsh on a guy with 2 posts.... kul - i personally like Dubro brand 3" foam wheels. they fit right onto your wheel shaft without mods if you don't mind them wobbling a little bit. also, change the tailwheel to a dubro 1". both are available at: www.horizonhobby.comwith these your plane will run fine in grass (mowed at least) also, welcome to the forum! there is a lot of information here, all you have to is read! i too, am new here but i have learned so much i just a week by reading. see you in the posts!

I'm getting near up to 300 posts. That's a bit of commitment and time. It is a bit frustrating when people come in and ask yet one more time a question that has been answered dozens of times and make no apparent effort to do just a bit of work themselves. The ones I do find tiresome is the question posted right above exactly the same question, like this one.

Your Apologie acceped , I was just about to post a question to you asking what I had done ha ha . Ok on the bracing it is 1/16 piano wire the ends bent to the correct angle and the brace wires are held to main gear with 5/32 wheel collars , if you do this and put brass tube on for axels don't do like I did and epoxy tube on before you slide the wheel collars for bracing on to main gear ha ha It won't work that way BTDT ha ha . sounds like a good idea. i think i'll try it. my landing gear seems a little weak anyways and i haven't found the right replacement gear yet

I was gonna ask how you got the main wheels on the tail wheel but, I was able to do it one way. May not have been how you did it. I pulled the wheel apart and drilled out the outer collar/hub (the side with the inner collar/hub is what actually holds the hub on the wire, although not snug like the wire from the main gear). So far it works like a champ, just put the inner collar/hub on first, put the plastic nut on then the foam wheel and finally the outer collar/hub. I'll let you know how long it last before I either crash it or the wheel comes off. Right now I'm awaiting 4" air tires to give it that Bush plane look. I will try the some wire bracing as well. It will mostly be for looks because I have aluminum main gear. Weight is not a problem because of the brushless mod.
