Got the opporunity to fly today after replacing all my SC's electronics last week and using my new DX6i. The only fight I had time for lasted 13 minutes and everything worked flawlessly. There was another guy flying and we had no problem flying 50 feet apart.
It may just be me but the motor sounds smoother with the new setup. The mod was not difficult or expensive and I no longer have to worry about the SC doing weird things.
Here's what I used:
2- HS-55 Servos GWS ISC-480 ESC AR6200 Receiver (came with the DX6i)
I did a very simple mod for the servo mount as HS-55's are not as long as the orginals.

It could have been smoother. The PZ ESC has 5 distinct 'notches' for the throttle. The GWS likely is much more linear.
Check that GWS ESC temp right after a flight. I had one burn up recently on a slow stick doing what appeared to be WELL within it's spec. Sucker melted down. Even the chairman in the GWS forum agrees that the 400 is a better ESC. I don't know why companies make several almost identical products only one of which is any good.
The Cub system is likely working way harder than mine should have been pulling a SS around at half throttle.

What is the website for the ESC you mentioned? What is meant by "5 notches" as compared to linear?
Apparently I must not have experienced any high temp problems as the clear shrink tub surrounding the ESC and heat sink has not discolored. If there is a better ESC I want to know as replacing the 480 is no problem. I rather know this now than experience a problem at 350'.

What is the PZ ESC number you are referring to?
I am still using the original brushed SC motor.

Hi Swimmer I run a DX6i in my SC don't they work sweet ? I Fly at my RC club some times 3 or 4 others flying NO trouble at all .

You can look up the ESC specs on the GWS site www.gwsus.com/english/product/speedcontroller/speed%20controller.htm If you want to read the comments on the original thread look here: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=877077It does not sound like you are using lipo. If you are almost for sure that ESC will fry. If you do change ESC and plan on going lipo be aware the LVC for ANY of those GWS ESC are terrible.You should ONLY fly by time and not trust the LVC. I don't know of ANY brushed ESC that has a suitable LVC for lipo. If you think you are going to replace the 480 about the only thing I can hazard a recommendation on is a Castle Pixie 20A-purely based on Castle reputation, no personal experience. Many brushless ESC aren't so hot either for that matter. I do use Castle Thunderbirds and think they are a solid product. I like the ability to program on the PC and upgrade firmware. Re throttle notches: If you slowly run up the original power system and listen there are 5 distinct steps of throttle change. I had put a small tag of tape on my TX and marked them. A better ESC will have a much more continuous change in throttle performance. fly

No lipo's yet, still 7-8 cell NiMH's. When I convert to brushless, which probably won't be long, I'll use your info to get the ESC, lipo's, etc.

It is a sweet flyer and the DX6i is great! Are many of the people you fly with converting to 2.4 GHz?

We have a couple conversions. Mostly it's the guys that can't keep their hands out of the cookie jar. We are not a sanctioned field, just guys that get together at a local park. As long as you aren't conflicting with someone else 72mHz seems fine. Getting out of 27mHz proprietary stuff is a relief though. Too bad such a nice plane is saddle with that baggage. OTOH it ends up keeping the sales stream going which is the retail goal.
Do yourself a favor a do a LOT of reading on lipos and chargers before you jump into that area. Since this is a SC forum and chock full of enthusiastic beginners without a lot of lipo experience there are better places to get this info.

I fly basically alone at a great place to fly. The field was formerly a sanctioned field but no more. The field is behind an outskirts school with with much room to fly. There is an old crystal board that no one has used for years. Apparently they moved on to a different site. There are a number of AMA fields here but for now I prefer to go it alone.
I've found a couple of websites that I frequent for technical issues beyond what I find here. This is a great site and I have learned a lot from the members and plan on being around for a long time.
At this point I am in no hurry to jump to lipo's. I am still a noob with only 12 flights. I still get butterflies driving to the field but the confidence that I can take off and land without damage is beginning to take hold. I do realize, however, over confidence leads to repair so I am trying to keep my head on straight.
I am on vacation this week and plan to fly every day, if the wind allows. My main focus will be touch-and go's.
I appreciate your expertise.

Swimmer, I appreciate that "butterfly" feeling. I have that when I take out my T-28. I used to have it with my Supercub, but now I fly the cub when I want to relax! Experience is the key to overcoming the butterflies, that and the realization that it isn't the end of the world if I crash....

I bought my Super Cub 2 months ago, three days after buying my first helicopter, a Blade CP Pro. The CP Pro was so hard to learn to fly, that I decided a plane would be fun. Well, now I can hover and fly figure 8's with the heli, and in fact have also purchased a Blade 400 and a BeltCP. With the Blade 400 I got the DX6i, and now have everything flying from that, including the Super Cub. I've also upgraded to a brushless motor, lipos, and new servos. I put a full range receiver in the cub, I was getting nervous about maybe losing it. The cub flies so nicely with the dx6i, and quiet with the brushless motor, its fun to do loops etc, and to do low flybys and just hear the rush of air over the wings and not the whining motor and gears like when it was stock. Now I just gotta figure out what to do with the cub electronics I have sitting here... maybe a home made foamy from some of the free plans online.
