I'm also a Newbie and been reading about props. Not only effect power or duration of flight, but lots of after market props have to be modified to fit. Some are softer material, so won't break as easy, but might deform some under power. Lots to think about. After reading I wanted to try the GWS HD 10x6, but my hobby store didn't have it in stock. They have another that bolts right on, so going to try it and will let you know what I think.
I also read a post about the stock props aren't balanced that well and can cut the life of the motor, but there is a balancing kit you can buy. I'll ask the store about that also.

Some people say not to worry about the balance of a prop on electrics. I totally disagree. It is important to balance every prop whether electric or nitro or gas. If it is out of balance and spinning at 7000rpm there is a good chance your bearings on the shaft the prop mounts to will be shot much much sooner. Also your electronics will suffer as well. It causes an unwanted vibration that is not electronic friendly. Food for thought.

You hippocrit..... Re: APC 10x7 thin electric prop « Reply #2 on Jul 22, 2007, 2:48am » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They do not need balancing. They are very close out of the package. I use them with both my brushless cubs and they are the best so far that I have tested. I have not used them with the stock motor or nimh batteries though. Only lipo and BL.

Hey Kevin,
I agree that balance is probably important. Question is, how often do you balance them, and what do you do when they're out of balance. I was looking at my prop the other night and it's got lots of scratches on it from "mowing" the grass. If it was balanced when I got it, it's probably not balanced now!

I tried what the Hobby Store had and it was a pz P51 prop that does look and fit the same. Just a little gold paint on the tips, but look like the same prop to me. I forgot to ask about what they have for balancing. Darn.

What is the process to balance a prop? Do you really need special equipment?

What is the process to balance a prop? Do you really need special equipment? I am not very good at making useful gadgets so i would buy one of these. myrcsupply.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=13666I like the fact that it will also balance spinners. As for the process of balancing a prop. Some lightly sand the heavier blade, others add thin layers of CA. I like the idea of painting a band at the tip.

I use a prop balancer as well. As Kevin has said in the past, they're usually really close out of the package and don't require you to do anything. I've got those nice 'lawn mowing' marks on my current prop, but it still comes out balanced on the balancer. Lucky, I guess.
It is handy device to have. Most of the APC props I've had for other planes came out really close out of the package, but one for my tigermoth 400 needed a little bit of CA spread thinly along one side to balance it right on.

Boy I missed this thread all together after I replied the last time. I stand by my statement about the 10X7 props and their consistancy. I have not had one bad out of the package yet. I however have had many 10X6's and 10X8's out of balance a few times. As a general rule of thumb I check them all regaurdless. Some do not need it others do so....... If you choose not to it's your stuff do what you would like. Others may agree or disagree but thats what I do.
