Well it was bound to happen. I was reading the MP XT thread on rcu and read a post somewhere that said if you havn't crashed a plane yet, your not pushing it hard enough. Let me tell you, worst advice ever!
It was a beatiful winter day, about 20 degrees and about a 3 mph wind. Very crisp and clear, a great day to fly. While keeping the fact that I was going to push the plane today in my mind, I took off and flew a few circuts. I had planed a "pattern", although the cub is not pattern worthy. I was doing some stall turns, loops, rolls, inverted etc. I had this idea to do a loop off of a take off, turn inverted, and fly back the way I took off. Could be very cool, although my cold fingers failed.
First off you should know I take off from a gravel road by my house, with is lined with trees on the east side (road runs N and S) So with my clumsy gloves on and the nice cold temps, my loop turned into a half snap roll. At the top of the loop, when I would apply up elevator to keep it inverted, I applied left rudder too! Yikes! With the trees only 10 feet away, I was doomed. However, I almost recovered, but clipped the top of a tree at full speed. My first crash in 9 months and over 100 filghts. I surveyed the carnage to see a wing stapped in half, a broken prop, and broken cowling.
Now the quest to retreive it. I wasn't going to leave it sitting up there with my new lipo to get snowed on, so I fetched a ladder and proceded to climb it. As soon as I got up as high as I dared, I shook it like crazy and it fell! But just down to the next branch Then I used the ladder to poke it down. I looked it over again and found, in addition, the fuse was cracked at the tail.
For thoes who don't read, skip to here.
Some pics.
Way Up there!
Poor wing. Only 5 flights on my new paint job
My rescue method
Climbing the tree
Shook like crazy and it fell to the next branch. I think this is where the fuse broke, but I do not know.
Fallen to the gound
I will be ordering a new wing, but fixing the broken fuse. Hows 5 minute epoxy? This is my first fix, comments welcome.
