Running a SC with standard radio gear (7ch mini reciever, Brushless ESC) should I be concerned with putting the gear in a plastic baggy on a float plane? Doesn't the ESC need some airflow to keep cool?

You may not need water protection for the electronics. I haven't so far. The plane is still stock other than for the floats. I have 37 float flights on my SC. I've had some hard landings splashing water all over the plane and the electronics compartment didn't get wet. Also had 3 water crashes. One stall just after lift off that came straight down into the water. One hard landing where the rear float gear detached, then the plane flipped up. One wingover maneuver that I didn't recover from in time and the plane hit the water. On all of these crashes the plane ended up with the cowl and motor in the water, the tail in the air. Water came up the motor leads a way, but no water ever got into the electronics compartment. For all of these I quit flying, went home, took the cowl, motor, and prop shafts off, dried them and lightly oiled the prop shaft and motor bearing. I didn't have the electronics protected and it never got wet. After drying the plane flew again just fine. I'm not sure what would happen if the plane flipped upside down. I've been careful taxiing in the wind so this doesn't happen.

Anybody have other comments about this? I am going to upgrade to BL in the next few weeks and will also pickup a set of GWS floats. My concern is water into the cowl area if there's a nose-over or flip. Has anyone tried to seal the cowl, or is this a bad idea because of air flow? I don't want to get my new BL motor soaked, but I don't want to burn it up either! After seeing this vid, along with others, I'm hooked on the float idea. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxZnLUmn-vwAnd this is my water log concern...LOL...wow. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL-dFLBwvdQ

The only thing missing from this video was a guest appearance from Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs. With that music it was like a scene right out of the TV version of Miami Vice.

This video could have only been filmed and posted by the guy's disapproving wife. I can't imagine the pilot would have posted that video!

The problems with that float setup is how narrow and close the stance of the floats are. I have mine 12" apart and with that wide of a stance, the plane will not tip over so easy. I used a small ziplock bag to keep things dry. www.ampaviators.com/articlefloat/
