Farookie: the ESC is plug and play ( and has nothing to do with your radio!) - programming: Long and short - you don't need it. I personally use 3.5mm gold connectors as my standard -big enough to deal with my usual batteries ( 3s and 4s lipos). Until I become rich, and can fly 90-120mm ducted fan jets with 6/8/10 cells, I'll stick with them. They work!

As far as veering to the right goes, make sure the prop spinner is not contacting the cowl, I've had that happen and it's crazy. A broken or cracked firewall could also cause that. The motor cutting off during flight does suggest a bad ESC, or a weak battery perhaps. The resulting crash damage could be causing the hard turn on take off. Just my thoughts...

As a newbie Cup pilot, can someone here suggest the norm for how much time one should allow between battery changes for a good cool down period? In reading through this issue, it seems it would be a good thing to get into the habit of doing. Thanks for any helpful advise on such.
