I was practicing landings on pavement last week. The battery door latch broke off on one hard landing. I foolishly I relied on the velcro to hold the battery in on my next flight. The next landing was a little hard too and the battery slipped past the velcro and hit the pavement. The impact dented the edge of one of the NiMH cans. I kept flying with that battery and have charged it twice since then with no problems.
How much abuse can NiMH batteries take before you retire them?

they can take quite a bit of abuse compared to lipos. as long as the battery is not leaking electrolyte and the can is not punctured then it should be fine.
