When I was a kid (long time ago) rc airplanes had gas powered engines. When did the first electric commercial rc airplanes arrive? What technology change made them possible?

Better batteries and more efficient motors.

Any idea when electric rc airplanes became common?

Are you writing an essay? Sorry, I can't help it - I'm a hopelessly curious person. I could tell there were some flyers in this forum that have been with the sport for quite a while. If they wanted to talk about the "good 'ol days", I am willing to listen. I thought others in the group might be interested too. Maybe people have been putting batteries and motors up in the air for a long time, but I can imagine a day when some guy shook the Ray-O-Vac D-cells out of his flashlight and said, "watch this".
