I just made a plywood square and marked the holes for screws to mount directly to the firewall where the gearbox previously mounted. Once marked and drilled for the firewall - I placed a Sharpie through the cowl and marked the plywood with a "dot" to get the motor shaft placement. Then decide on the motor mount (aluminum or plastic - the plastic ones have varying offsets!) then outline a stick end on the plywood - drill - cut - test fit - and finally glue (epoxy!!) the stick INTO the plywood - firewall side flush! - re-install the plywood - test fit the motor WITH the COWL in place - making sure the shaft and adapter will extend far enough for the prop - then drill and mount (more epoxy!) notor mount and then the motor - then - GO FLY IT!!
Pictures really help explain - so here they are - works for me!!
I made a mount for this motor with a old broken SC gearbox. I got a thin 2" x 1" piece of ply and some quick drying epoxy. I like the way this worked out because, I can use it on the SC and my pitts just by changing the mount. The old 480 mount hole can be used for lead placement location. I mounted the BL mount as far up as I could, to make it close to the stock prop shalt location. After the epoxy was added it was a solid as rock, with no flex. I this I should do this with a regular gearbox because they flex alot.
