New flyer in Ottawa, Ontario

Hello everyone. I am looking at buying the super cub s rtf with safe and found this forum. As I know the very best advice comes from forum members (learned that on my motorcycle forums) I thought I would check in with the experts before making the purchase.

Having recently retired, I now have time to indulge myself. In my younger days I flew some control line but never rc. So I'm looking for a good beginner model. I like the look of the cub since you can eventually put floats on it. That would be fun at the cottage!

so.....can an old guy learn to fly this plane on his own?

Absolutely you can. When using beginner or intermediate mode on the SAFE you need to be aware that it takes time to turn it as movements are limited by the system, but its probably the second best plane to learn on. The best being the now discontinued Supercub LP, without so much electronic help.

But, as long as you take on board what the plane teaches you about aerodynamics and flight forces, you'll be just fine.

The one piece of advice I have is that altitude is your friend, fly as high as is comfortable for you to see and keep the orientation of the plane clear - the ground comes up fast after a mistake if you're very low.

And yes You sure can learn to fly on your own with a Super Cub S

And as Sham said give yourself room...you need to know where your going to fly and how much space you have to do so
The SAFE technology limits turning radius in Beginners mode, you need to be aware of that starting out

The Super Cub really does not need the SAFE , BUT it does add some help when needed

It is a beautiful plane and Great for the beginner, it can take a lot of abuse and keep flying

My first flights was with a Champ my second plane I flew was the Super Cub....I even bought a SAFE Rx/esc unit and installed it in mine
to see what it would do.....it really does not need SAFE at all. So I took it back out and put my original Rx/ESC Unit back in
The Super cub flies that well.

Just maybe get a simulator or as i did buy a Champ and use it as a Sim, I call it the Reality Sim
that will teach you orientation and teach you how the Larger Cub will handle to a point
main thing it will teach you stick input and orientation something everyone needs to learn first.

Then the Super Cub will be easier to orient and control.

Read through this Forum and see the many Mods and adjustments and what others have done and how they handled the Cub

Thanks folks for the advice. I'm sold on the super cub S. My son (who is 38 and flys drones) likes the Apprentice S. I've read it is a more advanced plane than the cub. So I'm thinking of picking up both. The cub for me and the Apprentice for him since he already has flight experience. That way if I want to move up.....we already have the second plane. Any thoughts on this plan guys?

By the way....my niece lives in Texas....Austin to be exact. She's a Toronto girl that did her med school in NY and after interning in Florida, Arizona and Atexas.....settled in Austin. Just bought her first house!

Yes the Apprentice is a great plane and trainer as well

The SC is a 3 channel plane the App. is a 4 ch one. The apprentice is not that further advanced then the Super Cub

in fact I use the Apprentice SAFE Rx unit in multiple planes, which turn many planes into a SAFE plane
and one of the great features of the SAFE Rx is it has AS3X stabilizer which helps fly in windier conditions

the E-Flite SAFE Receiver is Great technology....allows many to fly planes they would not be able to otherwise in a shorter amount of time.

I totally agree with sham, altitude is your best friend - I learned that the hard way!
Any of the cub series are great to start with as they can be modified to the point that they look like a different plane

Great to see another new member.

Hi folks...at last made it back to the forum. I got pretty busy last fall and had to put the purchase on hold. So fast forward to this christmas and my kids got together and surprised me. They bought me the Apprentice S15E. But.....the local hobby shop has pretty much scared me into returning it! I will have to be 'self taught' and he feels the Apprentice is to fast for a beginner to handle. Had thought of getting a sim but they are very expensive. Then I thought I could return the Apprenice and get the Super Cub and a Champ as a teaching plane? Now I have no idea what to do. So much that I'm thnking of just giving up on the idea...any comments?

The Apprentice has proved to be a great trainer over the years, and with SAFE it should be fine. I can't comment on details, as I've never flown one - but I'm led to believe that its similar to my SportCub but with less speed and the SAFE tech. I don't see an issue, and would think its a better trainer than a champ - especially if you want outdoor flight.

I don't think its much faster than a Supercub, just follow the advice to give yourself plenty of room and altitude - I'm sure you'll be fine.

My advice would be to go for it, but allow space (height) for mistakes.

I do not own a Apprentice plane itself..BUt I use the SAFE Receiver out of the Apprentice in Multiple aircraft

One can take almost any plane and turn it into a "Beginners type plane " by using that E-Flite Safe Rx
Some models needs some modifications, like servo reversers or turning the servo around manually and some
even require changing the ESC or installing a on/off switch like the Apprentice which has to allow
the ESC to power up before the RX can be powered on ( my Yaks are that way )

that allows you to learn the planes abilities and how it handles and one can switch from Beginners mode to Int mode to expert mode
a little at a time until they can fly successfully enough as to not need the "Beginner mode" anymore
The SAFe Rx has AS3X stabilizer to help fly in windy conditions

My location is very small and limited, the SAFE Rx has allowed me to fly planes there I normally would be hesitant to fly due t0
the location of it.It gives me a safety factor and peace of mind and allows me stress free flying ( which i prefer )

I simply do not fly hardly at all without the SAFE Rx in my models now

I also have Micro planes with SAFE system-like the Pitts Bi-plane ( has a SAFE Rx system out of a habu jet ) the Pitts is a spectacular
aerobatic plane and the SAFE gives the same easy beginner type ability but also allows with a flip of a switch to full aerobatic capable
and still have the self level and panic in an instance in case a mistake is made

I have 2 Sport Cub S micro planes as well, one I fly during the day and one at night(has LED's)
I also have 2 EasySky Yak 12's one for day and one for night ( has Nav lights looks like a real plane )

So....
The Apprentice itself is Large and the Only real thing you need to fly it is Space. ( well until you get the hang of it )
once you learn more with it, you can fly it just about anywhere.

I understand the Apprentice plane itself is very stable and easy to fly and has been recommended by many people.

the Receiver is not limited to trainer type high wing planes as you can see, it works excellent in War Birds
has allowed a lot of people to fly planes they normally would not fly for years.

I love the technology and enjoy it.

Thanks guys... Think I needed a confidence boost on this one. I found a group that flies indoors at a local high school so I'm going to check it out. I'm thinking of picking up a Champ to learn on over the winter. At least get a feel for it and get some advice from more experienced people. But I've decided to keep the Apprentice.
