I'm not sure where to put this but I've got myself a Parkzone Stinson Reliant. I bought this so that I could learn how to use aelerions, as I have a 4 channel radio, but when I took it for a spin a while ago and tried to get a flight out of it I couldn't do it. It didn't seem like it could get enough lift.
Was I just too scared to get it off the ground? Should I adjust the elevator? Not too sure what to do, and it's a great plane, don't want to wreck it on the first flight.
Also how should the controls be set for a 4 channel plane? I'm used to the cub where it's the motor on the left, and the elevator on the right going up and down, and the rudder going left and right on the right control.
Anyone else have a stinson reliant?

Throttle - same Elevator - same Rudder - moves to the L side (throttle side). You can ignore using the rudder until you get used to the ailerons. Primarily used for take-off directional control and can be useful in some coordinated turns-this depends on the plane to a large extent. Aileron - on the R side, becoming the PRIMARY turning force, replacing the rudder. What TX are you using? If Spektrum and it is bound to the Cub then when you bind it to the SR you are going to have to change some settings most likely.
You can use a one model TX between planes but it is a bit of a pain. You have to be SURE each plane is set up right and trimmed before flight. Set it up wrong.......not good.
If you can get someone with experience to check it out take it up the first time you'll be a lot happier.
Do not even try to fly it with elevator and rudder alone. It will not be good.

To answer your question about the transmitter, (i think that's what TX means) I have a DX4e and yes I have to rebind it to the stinson and change some settings around. I didn't know what I was doing the first time and it flew backwards off the table like a fumbling cockroach on it's back.
Good to know about the rudder and aelerions, I wasn't sure where they should be placed. And I'm in the midst now of trying to get someone from the local club here to give me a hand when they have the chance, just hoping someone will reply.
Thank you for your response, so informative, and so timely.

Time for you to move on. It's a new flyer thing but don't get caught up in planes. Planes come and go. GET A GOOD TX! That, and a decent charger are the foundation of your electrical fleet. Throw your $$ at that in the beginning. It's money well spent.
There are other features you don't even know about [dual rates, EXPO, sub-trim, etc.] that you will REALLY like and will make flying more advanced planes easier. The model memory is a blessing you will not regret.
Maybe keep the DX4e-down the road it could be useful as a buddy box TX.
Most decent flyers transition to ailerons pretty easily but it may take 1-3 flights to 'get it'. I was ALL over the sky for a few minutes before I sorted it out. Sure scared me! Trouble is, as you know, that first 1-30 seconds of a new model's life is the most critical.

in my eyes there is an easy way of showing people how to use a 4 channel plane you dont use the rudder at all when you have your first couple of flights unless you want to turn your plane round why taxi'ing to get in position.
so your controls are the same layout as before all that is different is what would normally be your rudder is your ailerons and all you do to turn is roll he ailerons in the direction you wnt to go but remember not to turn too much cause it will start to roll round and you will end up inverted which is a big no no for beginners also as you are turning make sure you give it a bit of elevator to keep your altitude apart from that it is simple and before you no it you will be doing barrol roles and inverted flight happy flying Skypirate

and remenber when comming toward you move the sitck in the direction of the low wing to level her out. when the plane is going away from you move the stick in the direction of the turn when you see the wing bank let the stick come back to center and give some up elevator, it will stay in the turn with the up elevator input untill you level the wings
