I picked up one of those Key Fob cameras that shoots standard video (720x480) and was worrying over how I might attach it to the Super Cub. Here is the solution I came up with.
Since velcro and double stick tape tends to make a camera wobble in flight, I made this camera bracket. All you need is 2 large paper clips and two rubber bands.
You'll need a needle nose pliers to bend the paper clips.
I have used a red and blue clip so I will refer to each by their color. The color of course doesn't matter.
First bend the blue clip out straight. Lay the camera on the center of the clip with equal amounts of wire on either side. Mark where the clip passes under the camera on each side. Then bend the clip up on each side so you end up with a square that the camera will lay in. Now study the pictures below to see how I built a bracket with the blue clip to hold the camera. I used some strong packing tape to secure the clip wire under the camera. The bracket holds the camera in a tiny cradle.
Next take another clip and straighten it out. (Red clip) and simply find the center of the wire and bend it through the key chain holder on the back of the camera. Place the camera under the plane and mark where it will fold up, then bend the wires upwards.
Take your needle nose pliers and create rubber band hooks on each end of the clip wires.
Secure the camera cradle to the plane with rubber bands. It will not budge. This bracket holds the camera tightly with no shake or wobble.
It also holds the camera with a slight downward angle. You may get the landing gear in the shot, if so you can bend the clips to angle the camera downward further. Having both rubber bands on the camera holds it sturdy and even if one band breaks the other will hold the camera till you land.
If the weather is good tomorrow I'll have some footage from this setup soon for you to view.
I hope this helps anyone wanting to build a bracket to hold a camera for in flight video.
