On a side note, I contacted HobbyPartz.com customer service (that's where I got all the parts) and described the scenario. I wasn't expecting "here's a new plane" but they responded promptly and had some worthwhile input into what may have done it, recommending a range test and the possibility of interference, though it's rare with 2.4Ghz. Of course I fessed up that I had concluded the batteries in the TX died, but I was happy with the response. Who knows how it would have been if it had turned out to be their fault, but they were responsive and had intelligent feedback.

IT WORKS!! I replaced the TX batteries, then wrapped the ESC in electrical tape to replace the heat shrink and everything works great. In fact better than before, when I had tiny twitches occasionally. Now everything is steady as a rock.
Now I just need to fix the motor mount (actually build a new one) and I'll be back in the air.
