Well i was out flying today and doing some pretty tight fast loops and all of the sudden the wind just failed. It looked like a shot duck falling out of the sky. I have the stock struts and wings. I have a 580 brushless with 60 watt speed controller and 4 cell 3300 ma battery will 11x8 prop. Is there anything i can do to make the wing take it?

Carbon rods and strapping tape-lots of it.
A fine example of a seriously over powered and over weight Cub.

I thought I was overboard with a 35-36C.. That's amazing that your flying with a 580!!!! I have a friend that put a corvette motor in his jeep wrangler ;D ;D ;D Thats what I would compare your mod to..LOL If you like the way it performs and are happy with the 580, I give you a thumbs up!!!! If you want the look of a Cub and the slow flight characteristics of a cub but would also like it to perform like a jet, LOL, put a big ass motor in it.. ;D So, now you got to figure out a way to keep your wings on..LOL Lots of very good tips under the " WING STRUTS" section of the forum. I personally like the ones that use fishing gear because you can pick up that stuff in any wall-mart and be done with the mod in a few minutes.. With that motor you may want to take Flydivers advice and put a carbon rod and also upgrade the struts. Good Luck Ifly

+ 1 on upgrading the struts too. May as well reinforce the battery box area with all that force going down the struts to it.

If the Turnigy 580 motor is what you have, or is any indication of the power your particular motor has, it produces 3500 grams thrust on the low end setup, or 123 ounces. I'd guess your SC weighs about 2 pounds? That would give you a 4:1 thrust to weight. Are you pulling our legs? How does it handle? Have you thought of just buying a ParkZone P51 or a Wildcat? Have you measured the thrust you are producing with this setup? Do you usually just prop it up to about 60 degrees and hit the throttle to take off? Or does it just kinda blow the dirt away from underneath itself to get airborne? One more thing you should try... cut 10 inches off each wing tip.

Regarding wing strut attachment, here's what works well for me: I use the soft, bendable wire you buy at hardware stores to hold drop tile ceiling grids with. I saw it at the hardware store as:Project Wire or Ceiling Grid Hang Wire at Lowe's for 100 ft for $4.00. The way I attach it is: 1. loosen the screws for the strut attachment points just enough for the wire to go under the screw head 2. wrap the wi Re (just for you, John ;D) around them to form kind of a square shaped "U" with a screw in each inside corner. 3. tighten the screws to hold the wire securely. 4. Then fold the two vertical pieces of the "U" back toward one another. Now your wi Re looks kind of like a paper clip. 5. now form a hook with each loose leg of the wire, that you can attach the wing strut loop onto. I put a tight fold when I figure out where I want it to be, then just bend the wire over to keep the strut from coming loose. 6. cut off excess wire ends The beauty is, you can move the strut attachment point in or out, depending on how tight you want them. Also, you can bend the end of the wire over how ever much you want, so it releases easier, or tougher in a crash. In my case, I leave them at about a 45 degree angle, rather than bending them back flush with the fuselage. This way, they hold tight enough for aerobatic stress, but release well in a hard landing (I mean crash )

Well my wings are cut about an in or 2 past the end of the strut brace. I like the way it flys usually when i am just cruising its at about 25-35% throttle. It will pretty much take off in about a plane length.. I bought the set up a while back with the intentions of putting it in a bigger plane later on like a 3d but just have kept flying the cub. I put the carbon rods in and add the wire struts lighter. Well guess i will go try to break it again. lol hope the tail will take it now... Probably will fail next..

2. wrap the wife around them to form kind of a square shaped "U" with a screw in each inside corner. 4. Then fold the two vertical pieces of the "U" back toward one another. Now your wife looks kind of like a paper clip. I cant see her taking too kindly to this! John Heh heh heh.... If you asked my wife, she'd probably tell you I'm always trying to bend her like a paper clip. She doesn't complain though!

Hey Leisureshoot...I cant stop laughing!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D That has got to be one of the funniest remarks I've read so far!!!! I officially request a picture or better yet a video of that Cub in action. The takeoff distance must be measured in just a few inches. ;D ;D ;D Imagine if he had flaps on that thing ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D World record Short Field Takeoff For a Super Cub LP with no wind!!! 3.2 Inches ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

@koledracer
Hey I'm just having some fun thinking about a Cub with a 580 Brushless in it.. Please don't give me any explanation WHY your running a 580!!! I think it is great!!!! Just for the hell of it I may at some point in the future try and out do you!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Don't buy a P-51 or a Wildcat!!! They look nothing like a Cub ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

They look nothing like a Cub ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Ifly Well basically the decision process went like this. I was at the hobby shop with my exploded stock motor. I said hey what's the biggest prop you think i can pretty much fit on this plane? O. 11x8 ok give me one of those. what motor goes good with that prop? 580. O ok one of those too and the matching speed controller. that was about the depth thought behind this one. Of course this opened the can of worms with the plane. some things i have changed so far to deal with the speed and the g loads i put on it. 1. the wing is a lot shorter. 2. two large spruce spars that run down the whole wing. 3. i sanded a lot off the top of the wing to make it more flat because it was making to much lift at my cruise speed and it did not like to fly upside down. 4. Added carbon flat spars to the elevators and the tail. 5. Added spruce spars to the plane and filled in the stock battery box with foam. Well thats about it for now. I call is the Super Cub 3D now. I actually added a few feet to my take off now because of the wing reshaping and the extra wood weight. BUT soon as the wheels leave the ground i go straight up into an aileron roll usually and i love the peoples faces when they see it when i walk back to the pits people always ask was that a super cub??

Yeah i have ripped several things off in loops usually so i just make it stronger until it stops breaking lol.

Danger!!!! This is what can happen with a 580 Brushless mounted in a Super Cub!! ;D
