I was really sick of the whole battery box configuration and decided it was time to do something about it. I went to the LHS, picked up some balsa and started cutting up my cub. The extreme battery box conversion took about 12 hours over a few days. The video of my Extreme Battery Box Mod The Flight Test Video

Marlborough Airport (2N8) closed a few years ago after a developer bought the property. It was never developed and just sits empty. No fences, no "do not enter signs" nothing. Just sitting there empty. I have been flying at the airport for about a year and I have never seen anyone else there. I'm ale ays alone. It's great, you can drive your car right onto the runway. Sometimes I have the local police as spectators or a family riding bikes.
It is a very special place for me. I started taking flight lessons at Marlborough and soloed a Cessna 152 at the field in 1996. I later finished my training at another field not far away.
Thanks for the nice comments about my Mod!!!

Hi John, that's a very good question!! I have no idea what type of wood it is but it does say so on the sticker. The LHS said it was "Hard Wood" or "Harder Wood" than balsa. I remember looking at the sticker taped to the piece and thinking " I never heard of that. Right now I'm sitting at the gate in Newark airport waiting for my flight to Frankfurt or I would take a look for you. I have to get back to you in 3 weeks with that answer. ;D I can tell you this much, i could not cut it with an #11 blade. I had to use a band saw. Thanks for watching my video. I'll be flying over your island in about 6 hours.

Well, I should have been on the flight to Frankfurt Now I'm on the flight to Munich then connecting to Frankfurt. The joys of air travel. I'm using the Dx6i. It's a great radio. I was going to buy a Dx5 and thank god I got the 6 instead. I have a couple of micro copters programed in(mcx,mcx-s300) my champ,my sikhoi Su26-xp and the Cub. Wonderful TX. I saw this posted yesterday and thought " I got to have one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyQIzej8X2w&feature=youtube_gdata_playerwww.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8863I think this will be the perfect addition. I new that hitting the flap switch would cause the plane to dramatically pitch up because that is what happens in real aircraft. So I just guessed at the amount of down elevator I needed and added 25% of down elevator when the flap switch is activated. This turned out to be just about the right amount. Extending the flaps slowly is a great advantage. You only need to adjust power for altitude as the flaps come out slowly. I will order that speed controller as soon as I have a few things to make the shipping worth while. Ifly

I never shot any video when I did my flap mod. I did the aileron mod following the 20 part series by NeCubFlyer on YouTube. I just used the exact same procedure for the flaps. I did the flap mod from beginning to end in 3 hours. Very easy. The only thing would do differently next time would be to use just one servo instead of 2. I'm using a 2servo setup with a y harness. As for people saying flaps are useless!!!! I got them, I've flown with them and there is a big difference in flight carateristics. I need to fly with them some more to really get the feel for the plane with and without flaps, but I can assure you that my landing speeds were slower. I do think the plane floated longer close to the ground and this could be due to increased ground effect. I'm not sure about other more experienced flyers but I have a very hard time judging any change(except speed) in flight characteristics when it is windy. So much is happening so fast and I am constantly correcting for wind that it's hard for me to pinpoint changes. On the few and far between occasions when it's very calm is really the only time I can analyze changes. And one more thing I forgot to mention....I think flaps are cool looking!! ;D

O,I forgot to ask, the DX6i is a 6 channel TX with a flap switch. Were you referring to the stock receiver not being able to work with flaps. That was a problem I had. I had to fly a few times because my stock receive did not have a channel for the flaps. I upgraded to a AR 6110e 6 channel RX.

I trust you're in Frankfurt now. John Thanks John, I finally got to Frankfurt (I live in a little town called "Hochstadt" right outside Frankfurt) at midday. I wanted to bring my Cub with me but never got a chance to pack it. I will have to settle for flying the Champ with my son for the next few days. I hope the weather is better on your island. Its raining and miserable here.

Hi Joan, ;D I mean John, I fly quite often!!! That may be an understatement!!! I fly back and forth between Newark and Frankfurt every 2 weeks give or take a few days. Carrying a Guitar or light box such as the original box the SC came in as "hand carry" has never been a problem on international long haul flights. At least I have never had an issue with over 100 round trips in the last 8 years that I've been commuting. And believe me when I say "I have traveled with a lot of odd sized items over the years. Now remember that I said international long haul flights. Flying with Ryan Air(they charge you to use the toilet)may be a different story. I worked for the airlines for many years and because of first hand experience would never counter check-in something as fragile as the SC in its original box. The odds are against you that it would survive the trip undamaged. Do you still have your original SC Box?
I still have the original box that the Cub came in and I will have to dissemble it and put it back in the box. The only thing that I am concerned with is the wing dihedral. I have not tried it yet but I'm thinking that the wing may no longer fit with the dihedral taken out. I'll have to try to fit it next month as I will be off to Germany again then on to Ireland for a few days and would like (must) ;D take my cub with me.

The perfect case is called "Pelican", but the problem is, they are frequently used to transport rifles, so it would probably be more hassle than it is worth when flying. There are plenty of other uses, too....

No. Not mine. I need to get a Garand, while they are still readily available through CMP. Are you in US? You can order the Garand though the Civilian Marksmanship Program. It will come to you in the mail for about $500. www.thecmp.org/Another one of my expensive hobbies.

leisureshootRight now I'm at my home in Germany. I'll be back to my shop in New Jersey on the 20th. Garand, Very nice. I've heard of them threw my brother who is big into firearms. Yes, a very expensive hobby!! ;D That motor looks great. I looked up the data and can't believe how light it is...only 1.9 OZ. That should really rock!!! The Alpha 480 that I'm running right now has about the same performance and weighs close to double. 3.9Oz For the price, how can you go wrong!!!!! Ifly
