I took the plunge and upgraded my Super Cub LP to brushless status, and I LOVE the results. After doing something stupid and frying the stock motor and ESC, I decided to give the Cub a brushless transplant.
My local hobby store gave me a nice deal on this motor and ESC combo:

I got the Frio-10 (1050kv) motor with the Apollo-12 ESC. I also opted for the Spektrum DX5e/AR500 Tx/Rx combo, and switched out the servos with a couple from the hobby store's bargain box.
Instead of using a cut-down gearbox to maintain the proper thrust angle, I used four aluminum spacers and cut them to match the height of each corner of the gearbox. I cut a piece of sheet aluminum and screwed it to the firewall, using the spacers to maintain the stock thrust angle. Then I mounted the motor to the aluminum using four half-inch nylon spacers.
I mounted the ESC to the firewall with velcro, and I also mounted the receiver to the inside of the fuselage with velcro. I kept the stock battery in the stock mount.
After binding the Tx/Rx and checking the control surfaces. it was time for a test flight. All I can say is WOW! This little motor really screams! Half-throttle is about the same as full-throttle with the stock motor. This thing will fly tight loops forever (as long as the battery lasts). Honestly I was a little skeptical that this little motor would have enough grunt, but it powers the Cub with ease. It doesn't even get hot, and neither does the ESC.
I love the new Spektrum Tx. I have so much more precise control now. I'm using a GWS EP1060 prop, the same one I used with the stock motor.
All in all, it was a very satisfactory mod. Next up, ailerons! See photos below for details.
