I know it could have been much worse, but it still sucks. What really bothered me is that it was really not flying well. It was like it just didn't have any power. It looked like the shaft was chewing up the propeller and maybe spinning free, so I switched props and tightened it down, but the next prop barely gave me any improvement in performance. Kinda frustrated. Oh, wind was giving light gusts, but only 'till the ribbon on my antenna was at about 45 degrees and at that point the SC could barely fly against it. I remember it being a little more peppy. I really had to give it a solid throw to keep it from nose diving at takeoff too.

sounds like you need to upgrade to lipo

I was considering some upgrades like lipo, brushless, ailerons, etc. when I shelfed it two years ago. Now that seems to be more of a necessity.

2 years ago? Same battery? NiHh? Mostly dead probably. I'm amazed it would actually fly. Cycle it a few times but don't get your hopes up.

I was using the stock battery. I guess I'll just upgrade that along with everything else. Too bad.

Yeah, I'd guess it was due to your Nimh battery sitting around for a couple years. Just go to Hobbypartz and buy a couple cheap Blue Lipos, pull your jumper and try again. Ailerons are a fun upgrade, but I've never bothered with a brushless. I like the cub to be slower than my T-28 ;D

The easiest upgrade it keep the motor and rest of the electronics, get a lipo, and prop down to the PZ 9x6 or GWS 10x6 HD. You'll need to get proper adapters. The Tamiya connectors suck anyway. And a charger-a whole different quest. It's a basis of your entire fleet's power-buy well.

I miiight get something else, but it's unlikely and won't be more than a park flyer. Not until the kids are older at least.

Don't do any drastic changes. Shoot, you can use the Ni receiver with the stock lipos. Just get one of those for 23.99 and see if you can't find some way to connect it (the connectors are different maybe take the connector from the Ni battery and sauder it to the Lipo battery). I know this works because a friend I fly with accidentally bought a Ni receiver for a backup plane, then spent the extra $35 to get a Lipo receiver. When his lipo receiver died in a crash, he just saudered on the connection from the lipo to the Ni receiver and it has been flying fine since for the past 2 months.

If I do rig up a LiPo, won't I have a problem because there is no low power shutoff or something? I've never played with LiPo's, but I remember something like that.

The batteries don't really run down, they just die. You will notice a faint difference in the power in the plane before that though and should be able to get it out of the sky. Even if they die, what happens is the motor dies and the elevator and rudder work allowing you to float it in.

Oh, I have experienced that. I'm talking about a lipo needing a low voltage cutoff.

You might want to check out this thread and a few others in the batteries area, they have a lot of good information on the wonderful world of Lipos!! Check out the links that Flydiver posted on that thread. It's good info to read up on. I have been enjoying my recently upgraded to Lipo Super Cub. ;D I think you will really like the extra power. Snip the Tamiya connector off your ESC, replace with connector of your choice (make sure it can handle the amps) I went with EC3, Pull the jumper, prop down and enjoy. Did I forget anything there? You pull the jumper on the RX and you can fly lipos. The LVC is still a little too low so I usually just time my flights, but if you run it to LVC it won't ruin your battery. I've switched my electroics and added flapperons, but never bothered with a new motor. I like the slow speed of the original on this plane. Plus, when the motor dies it's just $10 at the LHS to replace. Lipos really add new life to this plane.

Oh, so the old stock rx has LVC? Didn't know that. I guess the real expense would be a charger then.
