Reading these forums makes it obvious that picking an upgrade path for the Super Cub isn't easy for newbies like me. People debate motors, esc's and batteries passionately, and just when I'm convinced to select one motor and esc over another, I find a thread that changes my mind. Starting with the stock Super Cub, what would be a good/safe motor and esc combination for someone who wants to boost performance without making the plane difficult to fly for the sophomore RC pilot? In my case, assume that I'll be upgrading to a LiPo battery (whatever matches the esc-motor combo) and a Spektrum Dx5 radio with new servos. I know this question is relatively common, but it's the question that drew me here and I'm more confused confused after reading numerous threads on the topic.

The lipo will give you a good speed boost. You could upgrade the rest and use the stock motor/gearbox for the time being. You'd need a new brushed esc, but those can be picked up for about $8 at Hobbyking.

Just upgrade to the lipo, change out connectors, put on the GWS 10x6 prop, pull the jumper, stop flying BEFORE LVC, and keep reading. It takes awhile but you'll sort it out.
Don't bother with the DX5, it's a short path to another frustration later. You WILL want yet a better TX.

Ok, with a Lipo will I have to replace the ESC? And what size Lipo?
As for props I'm using a Parkzone prop for a P-51. --- Answered my own questions at the battery forum. No and 3S lipo.
As for the prop I don't have the specs on it. Hopefully I won't fry the Lipo. I've already fried 2 on the super mini cub.

When you say you're starting with a stock supercub, is that a supercub LP or the NiMH version? If you're starting with a NiMH version, you'll be quite satisfied with the power boost you'll get from switching to Lipos and using a GWS10x6 prop (not the slowflyer one!). As basic motors, you should look at the headsuprc 2830, and the Emax BL2215/25. There's also a popular towerpro motor, the 2409-18T, but many of those in the know say that it has a soft shaft, and the windings are crap. 2830 - www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the-1424/2830-dsh-09-Outrunner-Brushless-Electric/Detail or www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the-1425/2830-dsh-11-Outrunner-Brushless-Electric/DetailBL2215/25 - www.tedani.com/emax-bl221525-outrunner-brushless-motors-950kv-p-970.html and buy it from here cgi.ebay.com.au/Emax-Outrunner-BL2215-20-mount-x1_W0QQitemZ110448671305QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRadio_Control_Parts_Accessories?hash=item19b740fa492409: www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5112 or www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the-1416/2409-dsh-18T--Outrunner-Brushless/DetailThe cheapest decent ESCs around are the HobbyKing SS series, you can get one rated to 25a for $9. Don't bother with any of the cheap ones from ebay, or the Mag8 brand, but ebay does have good 30A hobbywing/eagle ESCs for around $20. It will make life easier if you buy a programming card for the ESC too. You can pick out your radio by looking at this current thread here: supercubclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=sccgeneral&thread=2991&page=1#20315. Buying cheap to start with, and saving up for something quality seems a wise move. In terms of batteries, the zippy 1600 seems to be the prefect compromise between weight, power capacity and price. www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6539

Dillzio Thanks. I've just spent the past 1/2 hour trying to figure out why I was looking to replace a 149g NiMH with a 170-200g LiPo. I figured I must have been looking at the wrong ones.

Nah, 170 is WAY too heavy for a cub with a stock motor. The stock Lipo battery is only 110g.

One more question: Hobbyking's search isn't very user friendly; more like user vindictive if you ask me. Using the product comparison I found that 10x6 means "Length and Pitch" right? So the only GWS 10x6 is the GWS-DD-1060. I'm preparing my first order to hobbyking. Given my experience with my other hobbies (PC building, guns) it will be the first of many.
