Being fed up with snow on the ground stopping me from flying at my local school field I started thinking about making some skis for my SCLP. I bought a float kit thinking I could use the float mounting struts to mount some skis on. Anyway after assembling the floats and installing them on my Cub I thought I would see how they acted as skis in the snow. A quick taxi lap around the front yard and I was surprised how easy the Cub slid over the snow. So later in the day when the wind died down it was over to the school field for a flight test. What a blast! She took off like a rocket and was airborne in seconds. The floats really tracked straight in the snow ( I chose a part of the field with no ruts or footprints in the snow) After a few maneuvers to get the feel of flying the Cub with the floats on It was time for a landing. I tried to land softly but bounced a bit on the springy floats. No problem though as the Cub tracked straight on the landing roll out. A few more landings and I got the hang of setting her down softly while carrying a little bit of power. One thing to consider though is to watch out for how far the aeroplane slides on the snow after touching down. The snow was getting a little icy and the Cub zoomed on forever after touching down. You run out of rudder authority long before she slows down so you need a big area to land on without any obstructions. (I just missed the goalposts!) Just taxying around on the snow is great fun as well so If you are snow bound put a float kit on and go have some fun. It's probably good practice for landing on water as well. Here she is taxying in at dusk after the last flight.

What a BEAUTIFUL Super Cub. Somehow, the simple decals you added to the stock look, along with the nav and landing lights, make this one of the most beautiful models I've ever seen. I think it's because it looks scale and original at the same time. Great job!

Update.
A lot of good flights today. The Cub definitely flies different with the floats on. I thought the floats hanging down underneath would make her more stable but it seems the extra windage of all that foam and plastic hanging out there makes her more susceptible to gusts. It was a funny day windwise today though. Dead calm one minute and 8mph gusts the next. Take-offs are real fun and quite noisy as the floats skim over the snow. Maneuvers are also different with the floats on and I got into an inverted spin at one time while trying to fly inverted. Luckily I had lots of altitude to recover! Couldn't seem to get the landings quite right most of the time today though and bounced her quite a bit on touchdown a few times. I got caught by a gust on the last one and broke the left rear plastic wire strut mount of the top of the float so that ended the days flying.
Back at home and an easy repair with epoxy fixed the broken mount. I noticed that the thin plastic on the bottom of the floats is taking quite a beating from my landing on the icy snow. (Something it was not actually intended for of course!) I had read in a post somewhere that this happens so clear packing tape to the rescue! I have now covered the bottom of the struts in a layer of our favourite repair material and I'll see how that stands up to being whacked onto the snow at 20mph or so.
I think the floats are actually hollow and not solid foam. So the plastic bottom has to be in good condition and sealed well to the float if you use them for their intended purpose on water. I think using them as skis may ding them a bit to much and may puncture the bottom. So I'll probably keep this set for winter use only and buy another set for water use later.

I agree very nice looking cub you have there. I'm looking in to upgrading my original cub to Lipos and adding lights. I have a Turnigy camera on the way from Hobbyking and am looking forward to taking aerial videos as well. I live "down the road" from you about 45 mins or so in Hopewell.

Any diagrams on where the lights go exactly on a Super Cub. Isn't there only one landing light on the left side of the cabin?

The Cub being what it is, I assume there are probably all kinds of setups.

The Cub being what it is, I assume there are probably all kinds of setups. Well landing/taxi lights on similar aircraft as the PA-18 (High-wing, General Aviation) are usually two lights on the left wing.
