Update! Well the inevitable happened. My modified MLG took a real whack on the left side after a unintended landing from a botched touch and go. Nice thing though is that the thin gutter aluminium that I used for the strut cover just folded up and absorbed the impact and the gear leg bent back a bit. No damage to the battery box or mounts. Kind of bent it all straightish with my fingers at the field so I could carry on flying. When I got home took the strut cover off and dressed it back into shape and straightened the bent gear leg. Took about ten minutes and all back together good as new. Moral from this? Gutter aluminium is a perfect material for this job. It is thin yet reasonably strong but being really ductile (they have to roll gutters out of it!) bends and absorbs the impact when it has to.

That's great. I thought the small sheet and triangulation would be too stiff for that. Maybe the best of both worlds.
