Hi all,
I've read somewhere about people wanting to know what the difference is between the ESC/receiver from the original super cub, and that of the super cub LP.
I asked horizon and they replied:
"The receivers/esc are different in that the LP version has a LI-PO cut off voltage that will shut the motor off at a protected voltage range. The other has a much lower cut off for NMH batteries. "
I have written back:
"You have told me that the difference between the original super cub's ESC/receiver and that of the super cub LP is that the one from the original super cub does not have a low-voltage-cutout (LVC) suitable for lipo batteries. This is incorrect.
The receiver/ESC from the original supercub also has a separate LVC for lipo batteries that can be enabled by removing a jumper.
Could you please reffer this question to someone whom is more familiar with the electronics of the super cub. I would like to know if there is any difference between the ESC/receiver from the original super cub and the super cub LP other than the fact that one of them ships with a jumper and the other does not. "
Hopefully their next reply will be a little more helpful.
Is there ANYONE out there that actually KNOWS?

The answer direct from Horizon themselves:
They are the same receiver. The only different is the plug's for the batteries.

Amazing! Someone either knows something there or is guessing. If the only difference is they changed the plug and pulled the jumper then using the 10x8 should be fine for the RX/ESC but harder on the motor or they are just plain wrong and things will burn out more often.
I seem to be seeing an unusually large number of complaints about the RX/ESC failing. Maybe they just got a bad batch that all got put in the new LP. Or maybe that CRS didn't know what they were talking about. Hard to know for sure. I've asked 3x now by phone and the best I got was that it was a different part #, which makes some sense with a different connector.
They are having an issue with the Radian sailplane breaking props spontaneously (not crashes, just breaking). There are pages of it on the forums. One thread had a Hobby Zone guy participating. When it became pretty obvious it was a design flaw he went away-never came back to date. Numerous calls and emails by numerous to CSR always gets a 'we don't know anything about that'. Right. Nice folks but carefully clueless.

I get the impression that if the 10x8 is run at full throttle with lipos it will draw too much current and burn out the ESC and maybe the motor too, hence why the LP comes with a smaller prop. I spoke to the South Australian distributor of hobbyzone stuff and he essentially said the same thing. He said the insides of them are identical, but the one on the LP doesn't ship with the jumper. He said when they do warranty repairs on the LPs they use the older style ESC/receiver cos we don't have the newer ones in the country yet. On my thread about making a fix for the crappy stock ESC, I've written in there what the part number is that's written on the power-transistor, and have posted pictures too. Would be interesting if someone could check the part number on the ESC from the original supercub to see if they match. I've just got some new batteries from hobbyking, guess what connectors they all had? that's right, Deans! They also sent me 5 male and 5 female deans plugs for free. I guess I'll change my battery connector over to a Deans plug. Changing one plug on my receiver sounds much easier than changing the plugs on all my batteries.

What's going on with their connectors? I ordered 2 Zippy Flightmax, 2200 mah and 2 Rhino 1550 mah, the Zippy batteries came with Deans attached (no freebies though) and the Rhino batteries had the EC3 (or whatever)

LOL
I got 3 zippy 2200mah 15Cs, three APC 9x7 props, two prop savers, a big spinner type bolt, three female EC3s with wires attached, one male EC3 with wires attached and they sent me ten free Deans connectors.
I guess they must have liked me! ;D

BRAINWAVE!
I'll solder one of my female EC3 plugs to a male Deans plug to make an adapter! Now where did I leave that heat shrink tubing?

sure thats not backwards mate?
on my batt's ec3 are FEMALE's, esc/receiver ends are male....
so shouldn't that ec3 end be male? not female?

he's going from MALE EC3 on the ESC to FEMALE DEANS on the battery. As it should be.

Yeah, you called it Erwin.
It goes from male EC3 on receiver to female T plug on batteries
