Hey guys, I was wondering if an expert with this sort of thing might be able to hel me ut. Since my SC is taped and has LED wiring in it now, it's more sluggish than it used to be.
I want to upgrade the motor. I don't want to spend a ton of money. It doesn't have to have the speed of a T-28 Trojan or anything, just enough oomph to be able to climb with less effort and cruise without needing so much power. If possible, I want to keep the stock transmitter, receiver and so on. It doesn't have to be brushless or anything...I just want a little more power.
Advice?

Get a 3S lipo. Your batteries can't take the load. A new motor won't help the batteries. Lots of info in the battery forum.

Or use a 8 cell nicad pack in stead of the stock 7 call pack but you need a suitable charger to fully charge it. Like flydriver said lipo is the best option at this stage but again you need a suitable charger.

So upgrading to a lipo will improve performance without needing to upgrade the motor? This sort of thing I don't have a lot of experience with, heh.
What's involved with lipo upgrades? *goes to the battery forum*
Would using an 8 cell nicad pack be enough of an upgrade?

you got some research/reading to do my friend. (we all have gone through this)
Nimh & lipo do not compare, I have all stock electronics in my cub and I use 3s (3 cell) 20C 1550mah and 1750mah Lipo's and the difference is crazy!
Biggest thing to learn is how to safely charge/handle/understand lipo batteries.
But as far as turining into lipo, mod plne batt box to fit lipo, solder deans connector onto wires that will plug into battery, remove jumper from the rx/esc, and go with a smaller prop GWS 10x6 for instance.
But YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND LIPO OPERATION & SAFETY! they can explode, then can swell, they can burn your house down.
Anymore help let me know, I can go into more detail.

Please do. I am aware that LiPos are pretty tricky which is perhaps why I haven't been too keen to switch to them until now, I know they can explode if they are impacted hard and can be ruined, but I don't know the specifics, so if you wouldn't mind, please do go into detail.

biggest dangers of lipos are: over charger, puncture, physical damage that causes the polymer buffer layers between the lithium to break and create a short.
if you have a not so smart charger, and you accidentally set the charger to 4 cell, but you are charging a 3 cell battery, you are in for trouble, this is one of the easiest and most dangerous mistakes or accident that can happen. alot of newer chargers can detect this and will not start the charge.

If you do everything the way it is suppose to be done and not cut corners you will be fine.
Another thing is do not charge over 1C!!!!!
example: 1550mah is equal to 1.55 amps 1Cx1.55A=1.5A charge rate
for 1750mah battery do not exceed 1.7A charge rate.
Kimura if yah got more questions don't hesitate to ask.

^^ actually alot of the manufactures have came out and said that charging over 1c isnt very harmful, but if you push it you will lose capacity over time. the BIG important thing is you MUST use a good balance charger or you WILL have problems with cells over charging and causing dangerous problems.

Here's a good place to start: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209187IMO folks jump into lipos way to soon and chalk full of ignorance. Do some homework. You need to know a fair amount about the battery, the charger, and the $%$%#%# stupid taps. THEN you need to figure out how to stick it in an airplane and THEN deal with the consequences of that. All that info is here already. For now the 8-cell might work. Trouble is you need a new charger for THAT, though the wall wart will work, but slowly. There are ways to get by a bit more cheaply in this sport but there are few ways to get by really cheaply. A semi-decent upgrade will cost you more than the original plane.

Well here's an interesting turn of events. The plane was flying really slow today. Even with a fully charged battery, full throttle sounded like half throttle. I took the cowl off to examine the motor and what do I find? The motor is loose! I take it off of the firewall to discover one of the mounting screws is gone and the other i loose. Luckily I have a spare screw. Tightened it real good and it flew good as new. So with a that in mind, I think I'm going to stick to the nimh batteries since they're more durable. I will upgrade to an 8Cell battery pack though. Saw this on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMidBVO8__A&feature=relatedThat's much better than with the stock battery and plenty of power for me.

Thanks for the info fly! Funny, I just watched a youtube video earlier today showing the Elite 1500 8-cell and what a difference it makes. That's plenty for me. So cheapbatterypacks.com I select cell count and wire type a they make the pack for me? Only problem is the Elite 1500s are out of stock. I hope that's just temporary. As far as chargers go, in the link you posted you said you like the Great Planes Charger. Do you have a link to the unit and the cost? If so I would greatly appreciate it.

you may want to check out Hobbycity.com
Great prices, some people like it, some don't. I personally liek it and have had good luck. One thing if you are in the USA or anywhere for that fact get the EMS Exprexx shipping (I think that is what it is called) I get my packaged in Maine n 4-days. If not you could wait awhile.
but I got my 4 lipo's and charger, deans connectors, everything from them I spent maybe 90.00 for everything (that included shipping) and I am very happy, probably "not the best" but I know not the worst.
Just my opinon

Do you have a link to the unit and the cost? If so I would greatly appreciate it. Read the link again-I've edited it for 6 months later. I got the GP charger 2nd hand and it's starting to get flaky. No longer recommend. The Elites are high performance but maybe more short lived than I thought (a year or less?). This may or may not be an issue for you. Can't help much with the charger. Good NiXX chargers are as expensive as decent lipo chargers. The cheap ones are ..... cheap. The one I have now is harder to use than my CellPro 4S lipo charger, and cost as much.
