Hey Guys. I've came up to several discussions on RCGroups about the stock 480 motor on our wonderful Super Cub. I've seen some here at SCC too. They were discussing about how short the motor life is. I've came up to the thought that my motor's been working for over 2 years by now, ever since I bought the plane. My motor's all beat up now, wire's should be soldered by any chance, and I may have to replace it. Should I replace it guys. Any one who's had experience of the death of their motor, please tell me how it broke. I'm worried that my motor will burn out while flying far over the ocean. I've been thinking of beach flying. I do wish to replace mine with a brushless Park 480 but do have to do any mods with my ESC or battery? Thanks.

Plain and simply, yes. To go brushless you need to replace ALL electrical parts (servo's included).

normally when a brushed motor is wearing out the increased resistance across the com and brushes will cause the current draw to jump up, so if you start to notice short flight times, hot batteries and motor be on the look out. it could also just die one day out of the blue with out warning so ya never know.

The stock motors are cheap - if in doubt swap it out.

Stock motors are cheap, like $11. If you want it to scoot try a Park 450 Brushless, handles the winds a whole lot better. I flew another plane on a beach in NJ, early AM, tide was out and the packed sand runway was SWEET!

I hear ya about the sand. Sometimes it's almost like a pool table - smoooth. Not as hard though.
