hey all,
im looking to get some new batteries for the cub. im looking for some more power/extended flight time. i'm not ready for lipos because of the information you have to know and the expense, but i would like something better.
is there anything good out there between stock 7 cells (which im running now), and lipos that are cheaper, yet better?
if anyone knows of what im looking for, please send me some product links and a price, plus chargers and whatnot i would also need.
thanks!

I know you said not lipo's, but you'll get there sooner or later and sooner is more flight time. I used these lipo's on an otherwise stock SC and they worked great. I did change to deans connectors at the same time. These are the lipo's I use. stores.ebay.com/cwtco3 Cells, 2400mAh. I've used in flight and recharged at 2000+mAh so they aren't really 2400's, but they seem fine. $43 for 2 batteries shipped from HK ($18 for the 2 batteries plus $25 shipping total, looks like they are scamming ebay and paypal because you don't pay the fees on shipping). I used this charger www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2055, it charged at 1.5A so did ok also. There are better batteries and chargers, but they all cost more. I fly almost every day and have since March and they are lasting. I've had 4 and 1 isn't much good anymore. They come with deans connectors. You should change to deans anyway. www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2116. But hobbycity is a real slow shipper, real cheap, but real slow. Here is a US place that is real good and only $2 shipping. www.headsuprc.com/servlet/StoreFrontMike

Mike,
i like that last link you posted, the US one. I'm not comfortable buying something like lipos from HK, so im willing to pay a bit more for US distribution. That last site makes them look more affordable....ive seem up to $70 in my LHS, and those run around 22.
What is the amp load i should be using? i see they have different amps on that last link. i just typed "lipo" in the search bar and scrolled down.

Yes Headsup is a very good place. When I landed in the middle of a lake and burned out the esc, I bought one of these: www.headsuprc.com/servlet/the-434/2409-dsh-18T-Brushless-Electric-Motor/Detail a 2409-18T Outrunner Brushless Electric Motor & 32 Amp Electronic Speed Control. That way I'd have a spare motor. Stock load is supposed to be about 12amps. A 15C battery is about 30amps, some are more, some are less. So a 15C is fine, that's what mine are and I can pull 20amps at wot with a 10-6 prop. I normally fly at .5 to .7 throttle so I don't have any problems overheating. The prop also helps decide the amps used. I've flown at .8 throttle, which is about 18amps for a few minutes and then wot the rest of the time and the battery did get very warm, but not hot. One of my lipo's came unchargeable, but I added 2 AA rechargeables to the charging circuit (for the bad cell only) and the charger started and fully charged all the cells! You must use a balancing lipo charger (or seperate balancer) so each cell is charged individually and kept in balance with each other. I used 2400mAh so I could stay up longer, but the stocks were less than 1000 so a 1000 should still give you a little more up time since it is also more volts, 11.1v. Mike

Another great battery that I've been using is the Elite 1500 8 cell pack from cheapbatterypacks.com . I get around 18 minutes using throttle management, and it also has much more power. No mods are needed to put in the Super Cub. Its a good pack.

andy,
can you tell me how these batteries work? do you have to buy 8 of them and then affix them together and add the wire? how do you do that?
also, what charger do you use for those batts.? would this be a good time to switch to deans?
thanks!

stay away from the 12c mystery lipos, the 15 and 20c's i have heard good things about, but both of my 12c couldn't hold voltage and are now tx packs. only bad thing about batteries from hk is the shipping can take a while, and if you need to return something its slowwwww.
if you go to cheapbatterypacks.com and use thier custom pack builder you can select the elite 1500's, what wire you want and connector and they will build the pack for you.

Cheapbatterypacks is a great place to buy your 1500 mah 8 cells. And Mike Fredrick will take care of you if you have any issues. I had a problem with an 8 cell pack and he answered my emails right away, took the pack back and shipped it right back to me. Unfortunately I still had an issue with the pack but he responded immediately by shipping me out a brand new pack no questions asked. It's refreshing to get get customer service like that. He has an easy to use website that takes you thru the steps to order a pack customized the way you want it. The 8 cell pack is plenty of battery for learning but you will have Lipos in your future once your past the learning curve!

On the suggestion of Mr Mugan who is a well respected source of SC info, I went with the Hobbico DC Quick Charger II. Can charge 2 packs at once and handles NIMH as well as Lipo's. Very easy to operate. I bought mine from Tower Hobbies.

Once you move to lipos you REALLY should strongly consider balancing as a critical function. The MKII is a fine charger but doesn't balance. You'll need to add that so figure about $30 more + power supply. For that $$ I think the best balancing charger out there is the FMA Cellpro 4S. You'll find a bunch of Chinese clones in that price range but nothing with the solid function and reliability of the Cellpro. Safety is important with lipos. www.fmadirect.com/products.htm?cat=45&nid=4Got a buddy with the MKII-been using it for months. When he got lipos I showed him what the Cellpro could do the MKII couldn't. He bought one immediately. If you aren't ready to go lipo the CBP elites are hard to beat. I got some inexpensive 7-cell packs from www.batteryspace.com/. They seemed OK at first and I thought I'd found a bargain. Both of them haven't lasted a year and the CPB packs are going strong and worked better from the start. fly
