Trying to replace the prop after my latest... ehm... experience, but I can't get the nose cone off. It's supposed to pop right off if you pull it, right? I keep pulling to the point of something else breaking, but no luck.
Any hints?

Yes and no. It does pop right on, but the shaft is threaded. So, try unscrewing it. You may need to bend the bottom 2 sides up to spin past the prop blades. here's what it looks like without the prop. Even though you can't see the shaft end, it just simply cuts off, just like at the right side of the photo. The prop goes between the 2 nuts in the picture.

Okay, older thread, but same problem for me, but with a twist. :-)
I have arthritis in my fingers and have probably less OOMPH in my ability to grasp things and remove them easily. I have tried several times to remove the spinner or nose cone from my Cub, but so far I have had no luck. I have tried to put my fingers behind the spinner and pull outward. I have tried this same technique and had no success at all. I am almost to the point of rubbing peanut butter and jelly on the thing and getting my dog to gnaw it off for me. :-)
I want to remove the cowl and do some things with my stock motor, but this has been a handicap for me, presently. Is there any other simple trick to removal of that blamed little black nose piece? I was wondering if a pair of pliers that had some rubber cushions on them may work, but I don't want to tear up the nose cone in the process. What am I not doing that can make removal of this piece easier on my old big mits and fingers? I guess that an explosive charge is out of the question... :-)

In my opinion, explosive charges should never be ruled out!
But really, the nosecone is pretty tough and can take a lot of abuse. Perhaps two pair of needle nose pliers, one on each of the flaps behind the prop, and a coordinated twist in a CCW direction might do the trick?

My grand kids are my dogs.............. :-) I tried to get Murph to help, as my wife had a nail appointment and refuses to do anything that may ruin her nails. Murph gave it a shot or two, but seemed to be lingering in his ability to grasp the situation fully. :-) Servants? Well, that is on my bucket list for when I win the lottery.... :-) Now, I just got to figure out how to remove all the peanut butter and jelly from that nose cone.... :-)

I have to keep Murph away from the transmitter of my Cub or he may take the plane away from me. :-) Remember, dogs love to ride with their heads out in the window of the sidecar, but cats want to drive. :-)

I guess that an explosive charge is out of the question... :-) Never! As a former ordnance man I can attest to the reliability of explosives in reverse-engineering anything! That said, I just fold the flaps back on the nose cone and pull the sucker off...twisting might help but it really depends how it is stuck on there. After a while I stopped flying with the nose cone, became to much of a hassle and this certainly isn't a racing aircraft where aerodynamics are of the utmost importance.

Murph might be more inclined to help if you gave him a spin in his sidecar! Seriously though, folks - be under no illusion that the stock 'nose cone' (correct name is 'spinner') can be an absolute pain in the wotsit to remove. Fold the sides backwards (towards the front), then pull and twiddle for at least 24 hours. As mentioned, steady pulling with pliers may help. But you will be petrified that you might pull off the whole front of your aircraft. Console yourself with the thought that you will be SO happy in later months when you upgrade to a brushless motor with a proper spinner which simply screws on and off . . .

Yep, don't work over carpet with small screws/parts and glue. Good light is important. I use a shop magnifier all the time.
