Hi all, I've been having some trouble figuring out how to put the battery into my battery box. I'm using a stock super cub LP with the stock battery. The only way I can seem to get it to fit is by really squashing it into there, and that rubs against and strips the wires really easily. Then, the only way to get it out of the box is by pulling on the wires, which really isn't ideal. My battery has been into the battery box only 5 times and it has already stripped one of the wires so that bare metal is showing, it's only a matter of time before the other wire strips too and my super cub becomes a flying bomb! VERY DANGEROUS! I've wrapped the wires in some electrical tape to cover the bare metal, but now it's even more of a struggle to get it into the battery box. I've checked the manual, and the DVD and no where AT ALL does it show you how to put the battery into the battery box. Could some one please post pics showing how the battery can be inserted and removed from the battery box without damaging the wires? Cheers, -Dylan PS Like my popsicle stick battery box reinforcement? I just did it :-D

Well what I did on my cub, I had original Nicad cub, converted to Lipo. I cit out the bottom of the battery box, and I stand my batery in vertically with velcro up against the "forward" wall of the plane. Works awesome, I use anywhere from a 1500mah to 1800mah. Tough to explain but I think yah understand Make sure thebare wireis taped well, you do not want any short circuits. George

The stupid battery box is one of the 'lesser gems' of the Cub. Struts, landing gear, and battery all converge there to create a hassle and weak spot. The thing is just too small. Probably easiest to carve it out and go vertical.
BTW-if you short a lipo it is very unpleasant indeed.

Hmmmm, it does seem like quite a problem.
How do you mount the battery vertical in the stock super cub? As the receiver/ESC is directly on the other side of the battery box, does that mean you have to move it so make room for the battery to poke through?

I have a 2200 mah 3S Zippy stuffed in there, similar to gagallagher, except I used soft sponge to make a box for the battery.

Yeah, it's a 'built system'. Once you break the mold you can do what you will. A pretty common thing to do is mount components with velcro. This is done all the time with non-RTF systems.
Pull the RX/ESC and velcro mount it on the side of the opening. Then cut away the top of the BB as necessary. Mount male velcro on the front of the BB area behind the firewall. Mount female velcro to the battery. Stick it vertically that way. This gives you WAY more latitude for batteries. Some folks (me) advocate a 2nd velcro 'battery belt' or putting some kind of foam/balsa wedge in there to make sure the battery can't come loose.
There are numerous pictures of this kind of modification available in the files.

Cool, got any pics? Also, if the ESC/receiver is moved to the side of the fuselage, does it need a counter weight? A couple of shots here. I started with a virgin fuselage, and removed the inner part of the battery box. Then I cut down the inner box to accept a big Lipo with room left for soft foam as protection. I didn't want the lipo to be hitting anything sharp or hard in a crash, I cut a piece of foam to use as a bulkhead. The pink foam is a template of sorts. I used a piece of Supercub Fuselage to make the final bulkhead. Then I lined the sides of the box with 1/4" high density foam from a seat, leaving room for wires to run, and air to circulate. 3/8" self adhesive weatherstripping would work well for this. The 2200 Mah Zippy Flightmax fits nicely. I use the empty space in the battery box as a place to tuck the wires. Since these pics, I've added a piece of foam to the battery box door for protection. I've also trimmed as much of the foam away as I could to try and save some weight and allow more airflow. If you mount the RX centered onto the back of the bulkhead, the lateral balance should be OK. Mounting the RX to the side of the cockpit cavity, could require some rebalancing.

i used some painters tap and made a pulling tab on the battery so its a bit easier to take out.

Thank you very much for the pics. Makes things so much better when someone posts pictures.
Looks like to much work for me. Get High Density foam from a seat, Get more foam, Glue this. I try to do mods that use the least possible things to do, and get, to do the mod. This is just me, and does not reflect how good you do this mod.
I may do this mod cutting BB, then putting Velcro on the front, sticking the Battery on the Velcro.
My battery is the size of the opening of the BB. My wires won't go in.
Thanks for the pictures of how to cut the BB.
Chris.

I didn't use foam in mine. I just used a few strips of door seal tape and velcro to hold my battery in place. Works great.

I made the holder that big because I use a 2200 mah Zippy. I would have used weatherstripping tape, but I didn't have any handy. I left the battery fitting snug to keep it from moving around and causing damage to itself in a crash.

I just used a few strips of door seal tape and velcro to hold my battery in place. Works great. I can't picture what your talking about. What do you mean, "door strip tape" to hold the battery in? The first few flights I put the battery in freely. At half throttle, mine still wants to climb, so the battery in front might help. One problem tho, if I want to put it in the bottom, I have to put my battery in sideways. It would be easier to put it on the side. Not sure what to do. I hate to cut the BB without knowing what will work. Chris.

Chris. This is a piece of door seal tape. It's basically a strip padded foam with a sticky back: I use a few layers of door seal tape to fill the necessary gap, and then attach the velcro to that. As you can see in this picture, I've used 4 layers of door seal tape to make up the necessary thickness: Inside the battery box, I only needed three layers of door seal tape: If anyone tries copying this mod, I would recommend having the battery slightly further forward, perhaps use one less layer of door seal tape. My plane ended up tail heavy and I had to add an ounce of weight to the front of the nose.
